Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
If I think a story needs work, I come right out and say it in my reviews and comments. If I think a plot device is going awry or there's some glaringly bad grammar or spelling errors I'll let you know. If I like something I'll let you know.
I am a college student, so my availability is largely going to be during school breaks on on the off-chance I have a low-stress semester. That said, things tend to crop up, papers tend to be due, projects need to made, so my availability will not be very constant.
For people who want to write original characters for anything, I'm willing to help them turn the character into a likable, non-cookie cutter creation as opposed to a cookie cutter sex object for the author's favorite character. Original characters, when used correctly, can be great additions to fanfiction (I'd recommend any of the Robyn stories by Ghost of the Dawn to any RW fans because Robyn is one of the best OCs I have EVER encountered).
Certainly a character might start out that way - I'd be lying if I said I've never done that because I totally have, but I've been reinventing most of these characters to the point where, one they might not even end up for the one they were originally intended and two, people seem to like them.
Similarly, new villains can make or break a story, so I'd probably enjoy helping people create villains as well.
I consider myself something of a feminist, but I still gush at the idea of being carried away by a prospective Prince Charming (or in the case of One Piece, Mr. Prince will do just fine).
For a longer project, I would like to have an outline or at least a general description of where you're going. This can help with planning plot twists or avoiding people figuring out a plot twist like, ten chapters before hand.
Here's what I have as resources:
For Ronin Warriors writers: I own the entire series and all of the OVAs, so fact-checking is entirely possible and relatively easy to do for me.
For Chrono Cross writers: I own and have beaten Chrono Cross. I don't recall where the in the game all of these files are, but they can be used for fact checking. Additionally, I have the strategy guide somewhere at my house, so that might be useful for checking information on elements and basic plot progression of the game (i.e. what did Serge need to do to meet Nikki, for example).
For Lunar: Silver Star Story COMPLETE writers: I own and have beaten the PlayStation version ofthe game - I would like to play the GBA version and, if I get my hands on a Sega CD, the original, but for now this is the storyline I am most familiar with. I do not own a strategy guide.
For One Piece writers: I am a senior member on Arlong Park, which may be the biggest English-speaking OP forum online. I have not seen all of the movies or the TV specials, nor I have I seen all of the OVA. I own volumes 1-18 of the VIZ manga translation, Unlimited Adventure, movie 8, and Season One First Voyage. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I've been posting fanfiction online since 2000 and I'm fairly confident I know the difference between good and bad reviews. Namely, there won't be empty praise or empty put-downs - at the very least I'll be able to say what I like and occasionally why I like something, as I will be able to handle the opposite. Largely I'm a content reader.
OCs, both heroes and villains. People seem to like them. Or, in the case of villains, hate them. Or love to hate. Pick your favorite ;) |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My grammar and spelling are passable but they aren't the best ever. I may be taking a course on grammar by next May. Also, my availability is going to fluctuate quite a bit.
I also tend to re-write things a lot which in one way is good and in another is not so good - in particular the Age of Legends series, which has gotten re-writes in the middle of it. End of Innocence was re-written in part to reflect my growth as a writer, and Thieves was getting a bit. . . unbelievable. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
All: I'm fine with letting people test ideas out on me and going over concepts.
RW: I prefer use of the English dub names over non-English dub names.
CC: There's so little CC fanfiction being written I don't know if I CAN be picky.
OP: I enjoy Sanji-centric stories (especially Sanji x Nami stories), although the other main characters are enjoyable as well.
Lunar: Not much to be picky over. My favorite character is Nash. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
All: Generally I will not except yaoi or yuri submissions (excluding Chrono Cross).
Crack pairings taken on a case by case basis, especially for Chrono Cross (which has a large potential for crack pairings). Also, crack fics that have the characters acting like morons (in the case of One Piece, more than usual) are not likely to be accepted. There are certain extents of crazy I will take (for example, if someone is still acting as a straight man and wondering what the heck is going on) and the reason for the crazy is reasonable (pixi stix = not reasonable, medication or, where applicable, magic spells = reasonable).
Self inserts = NO.
RW: Yuli bashing for the sake of Yuli bashing, no. Seriously, the kid is not THAT BAD. If you don't like him, then don't include him in your story.
CC: Once again, are there really enough being written for me to picky?
OP: I don't know WHY you people are doing this but I will NOT beta read any of the "Ask the Character" type stuff. I also probably won't read LuNa but I might be talked into a ZoNa. Speaking of Zoro, I prefer the use of "Zoro" over "Zolo".
Lunar: Same deal as CC. If you're going to have Nash angst based on certain incidents in Myght's Tower and Taben's Workshopm be aware that I WILL be tough. |
