Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been writing for six or seven years now and many of those years were spent learning how to improve my descriptive capabilities, the strength of my plotlines, and various other things that have to do with the mechanics of writing. As far as character goes, unless I see something that completely goes against character (unless it's AU), I probably won't say anything because everyone sees characters different. You might see Character A as annoying and clinging, while I see her as sweetly devoted. Most of the help I provide will be grammatical (because we all make mistakes) and technical, if I find something character or plot wise that I feel needs work I will point it out, but typically those type of suggestions are offered only when asked. I try to be as hands off as possible, because nothing annoys me more than when someone starts rewriting whole sentences instead of just saying "This doesn't make sense". That said, if you want to acquire my services, be prepared for constructive criticism. You don't have to listen to everything I say, because in the end it is your story, but if I see something wrong I will point it out and suggest alternatives when necessary. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My mother is known affectionately by me and my friends as the grammar nazi, I think I've developed a pretty good idea of grammatical structure. I'm good with the mechanics. For those who are translating their story into English, I might also be of assistance when it comes to smoothing out sentences so that they make sense. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Sigh. Character is probably my biggest weakness. As I mentioned earlier, if it's not a blaring difference from the original, I tend to not see the differences. Also, I'm not as well read/watched as I would like to be, so even though I have no problem editing for fandoms that I've never experienced, if you want someone who'll be good at seeing discrepancies from the original plot or character, you might wanna bark up another tree if it doesn't happen to be mentioned in my user profile list. Feel free to ask if I'm acquainted with a fandom, if you're unsure. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like the sweet stuff, the sappy stuff, the stuff that has a happy ending. If I'm gonna cry, there'd better be a darn good reason and there'd better be a good conclusion at the end of it all. I don't typically go for the Romeo and Juliet plotlines. I more of a Much Ado About Nothing or a 27 Dresses person, the whole story doesn't have to be happy, but I prefer to have the people I like end up together and not in seperate worlds...or dead. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I tend to shy away from anything sexually descriptive or that I feel is overtly sexual (lemon writers be warned). I also am not really into guy on guy or girl on girl, just not a turn on, sorry. If I happen to find any of this in a story, I'll probably drop it and run. Say what you like, that's just the way I am and it's not changing. |
