Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hello! I'm Half-drowned Dracula, I'm 18 and studing for my Masters degree in Astrophysics. I'm quite intelligent, and I've won prizes for my original writing.
My style has actually changed a lot since I first started writing here, so for a better indication you might want to go over to my livejournal (it's the homepage on my writer's page) and see some of the stuff I've written for comms over there recently, if you're not adverse to slash. If you're too lazy for that, I tend to write in the present tense, with a lot of metaphors. Someone described it to be as 'subtle, like seeing something out of the corner of your eye' which I guess is what I try to go for.
I make comments on a fic as I go along, so you can see what you're doing right or wrong pretty simply.
If you want me to betaread for you, I'd like for you to send me a mail telling me about the basic idea of your fic, if it's going to be multi-chaptered. I'll betaread any length of fic, but if it's going to end up novel-length, it'd be best if you warn me first, because I'm in University and lab reports sap my entire life.
It should be noted that I'm a Brit, and therefore I write in British English - so I'm a pretty good Britpicker should you need one. I genuinely enjoy betareading work if I can get into a plot, and I like getting to know other writers. :) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I can spot spelling mistakes easily, and I can correct proper grammar. I'm able to point out problems without insulting the writer, unless they're very sensitive. I read quickly and I can usually adapt to your own personal style.
I have a love of sixties and seventies culture, so if your fic is set during those times I can help out with that too. I'm pretty good with angst and drama writing.
I've got a good working knowledge of physics and maths, should it be needed. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Whilst I'm good at spotting spelling mistakes, I sometimes have a problem with short, simple words, finding that they look 'wrong'. This worries me and then I can get distracted. I'm not confident about helping with anything in a sex scene, and I'd probably be better with a slash sex scene than a het one.
And I'm not always the quickest replier anymore, you can ask Lilybet - education has destroyed any time I had for betaing. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I think it's fair to say that I'd prefer to beta for things I've seen/read, so I'll just list a few things. If you're not sure, just ask me:
Anything Sherlock Holmes - canon, RDJ movies, BBC Sherlock, THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE, I'm cool with it all (especially canon - Someone let me beta a canon casefic!)
I have a disturbing amount of information on the Harry Potter universe stored in my brain
Most Marvel universe movies that have come out recently - Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers, any of that
Anything by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett (Anyone writing a City Watch or even general Ankh-Morpork story, ask me, I'd only be too happy to help!) or Joe Hill. Also Gyles Brandreth's books about Oscar Wilde as a detective, they were good.
This is not a comprehensive list D |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'll be fine with anything really, but it should be noted that if I'm betareading for a book/film/tv show I haven't read/seen, I won't especially understand what's going on. I also haven't read much femslash, so I doubt I'd be much help there. And incest squicks me. |
