Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have both written and critiqued fanfiction for the past 18 years. This experience included reviews for fanzines (Star Trek), Yahoo groups (CSI, Lord of the Rings, and general writing), and websites (X-files, Lord of the Rings, CSI, and NCIS). I give honest but gentle critiques and suggestions. Having been on the receiving end of some very harsh critiques, I know how it feels.
I will critique the grammar, spelling, and punctuation of any story, but for content issues such as plot and characterization the story must be in one of the following fandoms: ST:TNG, LOTR, X-files, NCIS, House, or POTC. I can generally respond within 24 hours for a short chapter (3000 words or less), and 72 hours to a week for longer pieces. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Since I previously worked as a teaching / administrative assistant, I have developed excellent skills in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Even in the fandoms listed above, I am more skilled with some characterizations than I am with others. For example, in writing for NCIS I do best with Gibbs and Abby than with any other characters. Also, since I have not written my own stories for House or POTC, I'm probably weaker with those characters. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
As far as 'ships go, I prefer the following: Gibbs/Abby and Tony/Ziva (NCIS), House/Cuddy (House), Jack/Elizabeth (POTC), Mulder/Scully (X-files), Frodo/Sam (LOTR), and Picard/Crusher (ST:TNG). I also like femslash in any fandom. I will read other 'ships but not slash (except LOTR). |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't care for slash stories except as indicated above. I am fine with M-rated stories or those that include kink, BDSM, character death and so forth as long as I know what to expect before I read it (warnings and ratings should be as appropriate as possible). |
