Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm new to the world of official beta-ing, but I have been helping edit and reviewing for a while. My sceduele is pretty free, so I should get things back to you quickly. I like helping people out, though sometimes I can come across as overlly blunt, or mean. Please, when you first ask me to be a beta, tell me if you want total bluntness, or if you'd rather I be nice. I can do both, it's just a matter of what you want. I've read all the Harry Potter books as well as the Tales, Quidditch, and Fantastic Beasts, and many of JKR's interviews and extra info she's put out. I'll be following Pottermore religiously. For the LotR I've read the Trilogy, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion. I'm by no means a Tolkien buff, but I do know quite a bit, and I have a bunch of LotR atlas's and encyclopedias and such lying around, so if I don't know something I'll find out. With every other series you can assume I've read all the books. I can give you crit however you want, in a message, on your story, about specific things or things in general, just tell me what you want and I'll try to do it as good as I can. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I love things like character development and word-building. I'm thinking about favorite characters almost incessantly, so if you want my opinion about a certain character, I probably have one. I'm good at grammar in the sense of things like your vs. you're and sentence structure. I'm also pretty good at determining what flows. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Spelling. I'm not that good, but hopefully you have a spell-checker. I'm not amazing with words like affect vs. effect. I'm also not the best at punctuation, especially commas. I'd rather not work with sex or long romance scenes, because I'm just too inexperienced and it'd come across stupid. I'll read it, but I can't really help you write it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like more action/adventure type stories. I love "what-if's" and AU's, as well as stories that explore minor characters. I love writers who think outside the box. I love dark stories. I also like romance when the romance isn't the whole story, as I think romance can really explore characters better. Plus it's fun. I like tragedy and bittersweet endings, and I like authors who jerk the characters around and make their lives insane and hard. I like not knowing the ending until I read it. I love strong, hardcore awesome smart women. Most importantly, I love a world and characters that aren't perfect. Make them real, and I'll read it, basically. I prefer bookverse stories when there's a book and a movie, unless the movie came first, obviously. I love an author who'll take a "kid's movie" like Lion King or Tangled and treat the characters like real people, and right a story with some meaning. Because there's always been meaning in Lion King. And we know it. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Romance stories where the only object is for the guy to get the girl. Related; romance stories in which the only plot is people kissing. I will not read these. I'd also rather polish than salvage, so please have already put some effort into making it neat and readable. |
