Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
After many years of being on fanfiction.net I've seen a lot of good authors come and go and decided it was time to make the offer to pass on some of the things I've learned, mostly 'the hard way' to aspiring new authors, things such as poor punctuation and general story construction and character development.
I'll offer my services to anyone who needs them, however I'd generally prefer to help people out who take their writing at least semi-seriously, meaning that I'd rather help out where needed with a genuine story rather than with songfics, '10 things' lists, 'why I love XX character', etc.
If asked for I will try and give insight into a specific character if they are from a series that I know well (Transformers in particular.) I'll only make suggestions and won't get offended if you don't agree. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling, good vocabulary. Good grasp of dialogue and character development, as well as plot construction and general writing techniques. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have been known (especially in my earlier prose) to make rather nasty grammatical errors such as over-using commas. many of my own ongoing stories developed into meandering anathema so I stuck mostly to writing one-shot 'impact' stories; I love reading epics, I'm just not that great at writing them. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
as stated above, I would prefer to beta-read for authors who at least take their ability to write seriously, if not the content as well. Despite my own personal preference for writing one-shots, long, slow ongoing stories are fine if you want to run them by me.
as with most beta-readers, I'll tend to be more interested and thus more 'active' in helping if it's a series I'm familiar with; I'll still be professional if it's a series or character that I'm not, but if it's a character or series I'm not familar with, then don't be surprised if I can't comment on your portrayal of them. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
as also stated above, I'd prefer to hear from people who have a genuine interest in improving their abilities as authors; I don't mind light-hearted stories just so long as the writer isn't just looking to force someone to read rubbish. If you're genuinely not interested in improving yourself as an author then I don't believe that my services as a beta-reader will help you much. |
