Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am an accredited Beta Reader on Perfect Imagination. My number is 5604525742. PLEASE, if you intend to apply to me to edit, DO SO VIA PERFECT IMAGINATION. If you apply to me via Fanfiction(dot)net, then I will still ask you to do this.
I won't take authors who have not got at least one story posted (I don't mind if it's the one you want me to edit) so I can see your writing style before I accept you. I don't use the docX system here on fanfiction, instead I prefer to email Word docs back and forth; I use the comment/track changes system on Microsoft Word. I like to know what changes you accept and what changes you don't, and why, but not to the detail of every single comma etc.
Additionally, I don't really want to edit the work of anybody under 15, though it has mostly to do with maturity than anything else. I make the ultimate decision based on your work that I can read.
Also, I do require that you give me credit for beta-ing, because while I love helping you out, I feel really hurt if you don't acknowledge the amount of time and effort I spent on your work. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm VERY thorough.
I can correct passive voice if you want me to, and I will revise sentences that end with ugly little prepositions. Plus, I will help you rework just-plain awkward sentences, will help revise song-fics so that they are not half plagarized, and . . . well, whatever needs fixing, I'll be glad to help.
For listing's sake:
-Spelling
-Vocabulary
-Basic/intermediate grammar
-Punctuation
-Adding meaning/underlying message
-Symbolism
-Passive voice
-Preposition-ending sentences
-Contraction elimination
-Smooth dialogue
-Characterization
-Philosophical discussions
-History (Harry Potter and real world)
-Cutting out cliches
-Checking to make sure that you don't make any blatantly obvious Brit mistakes |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My schedule. I'm a college student, and therefore rather busy. I'm not slow, and will definitely get you a chapter or two at least every week, but it may not be as fast as possible. If you have a specific due date, though, I can work a little magic.
NOTE: As of 9.8.2009, I'm hereafter only editing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays, except in the case of holidays that I have more time, or when I'm bored out of my senses. Since that still allows for a very quick turn-around time, I don't expect it will be a problem. I obviously will take files before the week-end, and will be willing to edit an emergency-OMG-I-need-help-right-away! once in a while, but I seriously need to get focused on my life and off the computer, so I'm limiting myself on my reading, writing, and editing. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I love anything that features Severus Snape or Luna Lovegood. Beyond that, it's fair game. I'll do almost any Harry Potter stuff. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
No SNAPE SLASH, or LUNA SLASH because I think that's just disturbing.
NO PORN WITHOUT A PLOT.
NO CRACK FICS. I would never bother with asking anybody to beta those; they aren't worth it. Follow that suggestion, please.
NO SLASH-CENTRIC ROMANCE FICS. I don't mind if there's slash pairings IN the story, but it can't be the main focus if you want me to put the forceps to it.
For everything else, it depends on the other aspects of the story and your writing. |
