Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hello. My name is Calliope Jae or CJ as many call me. I have only just started to write fan fiction but I have been writing my own original work since college and reading fan fiction since secondary school. I have beta-read for a number of authors already and I thoroughly enjoy working with other people. I think that a second pair of eyes is essential when writing your own work. From past experience I have found my work to be much better after being beta-read and I encourage any writer, whether new or old to have a beta.
I am very thorough as a writer and a beta-reader and I will always read a story numerous times before returning it just to make sure I caught everything. I'm an honest person and fair. Whether your writing is good or bad I will tell you and if it is bad I will do everything I can to help make it better. I will be able to look at things with a critical eye and I'm very good at picking up on incorrect spelling and grammar. I am also able to spot plot holes and continuity problems. I am very good at characterisation, as long as I know the characters well I can help with character voice, mannerisms and motivations. I enjoy writing dialogue and feel confident enough to help anyone that has a problem with this. I am more than happy to help with plot, I have been told that I'm a good sounding board to bounce ideas off.
I require that anyone who sends me something to read takes fan fiction as seriously as I do. They need to be willing to put the time and effort into making their writing as good as possible.
I do not mind if English is not your first language but I must ask that everyone spell check and proof read your work before sending it to me. It is not necessary but helpful if the authors have some kind of instant messenger, such as msn or AIM but if you do not have any like this then email will work just as well. I usually highlight my changes with a different colour so that you can see my suggestions, ideas and corrections easily when I send it back. This is easier to do with Microsoft Word so I would prefer any work sent to me, to be in this format. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Seeing as though I am British I can help with UK geography, slang terms, famous places etc.
I'm very good at characterisation as long as I know the characters well and I feel confident writing in all three narrative styles.
I have a good eye for spelling and grammar and I am able to make sure a storyline is believable and realistic.
I will read stories in canon and AU as I enjoy both and would consider writing in both categories myself.
I am good at writing adult themed stories in a tasteful but detailed way. If anyone that needs help with a love scene or the like then I am more than willing to lend a hand. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not good with poetry, never have been so I really can't help with that.
I'm not very good at parodies, I'm afraid I'm the wrong girl for that.
Even though I love The West Wing and love writing for it I'm not very politically inclined. I only know what I need to know to get me through the show and I'm much better with the characters. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer to beta-read for fandom that I am familiar with, such as;
The West Wing - CJ/Josh, CJ/Toby, CJ/Danny, Jed/Abbey, CJ/Kate and lone character stories. If it's an unusual pairing or character then just drop me a line to see if I'm interested.
Harry Potter - Snape/McGonagall, Lupin/McGonagall and anything that revolves around these three characters.
I love romance stories and will read mature fiction, as most of my own work is mature too. To be honest though I will read anything, drama, angst, humour, friendship etc. I'll read all categories.
Don't worry about sending me slash fics as I have absolutely no problem reading them. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not a big fan of Josh/Donna stories from The West Wing, I'm sorry to say it but it's like watching a brother and sister kiss. I'm really not ok with that, ha.
I also don't like Snape/Hermione stories, I just don't like these two as a pairing.
I'm really not good with poetry or song fics, I've never tried writing them so I wouldn't be able to offer any help with these categories. |
