Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have experience beta-reading for several fanfic writers, two of which are published on this site. I generally prefer beta-reading one-shots, but will beta read multi-chaptered fics, provided I am given ample time between chapters. For instance, it would be difficult for me to get back to in a timely manner if I were sent a lump sum of ten chapters to read. I enjoy reading other people's work and like to help them polish it, however I usually just make suggestions in regards to changes that should be made, especially in the areas of readability, sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and flow. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am quite good at picking out any grammatical or spelling errors. I also have a knack for sentence structure, and more specifically what sounds 'right' in the context of a story. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As a beta my main weakness is being quite 'gentle' when giving constructive feedback - although I don't know if one could really call that a bad thing. My weaknesses as a writer are easier to pinpoint. I procrastinate, badly I might add. I also find that I need to add more elements to most of my fan fiction to make it 'fully realized'. Sometimes I also go overboard with descriptive detail, at the expense of leaving the characters a little flat. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'm open to almost any genre, the fandoms I prefer to beta are usually the ones I write in myself, although as long as I know the fandom I would beta it. I think it is important for a beta to at least have a basic knowledge of the fandom, especially in regards to characters. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Please no incestuous pairings that are portrayed in a positive light, although I'm not against a dark fic with that sort of subject matter. I also don't like beta-reading obvious Mary-Sue fanfics. |
