Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been reading and writing for as long as I can remember, and I was an English major before disability forced me to quit college. I tend to be good with spelling and grammar, though I'm much happier when people run spell-check first! Sometimes I can be a little slow, due to family life, but I always try for a 24-hour turnaround time, and for communication if I know I'm not going to be able to accomplish that. My style tends to be a lot like my own writing, so if you dislike my writing, you probably won't like my work on your stories. And I don't mind if you want me to look at something on a trial basis. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My main strength is in writing relationships. I'm good with spelling and grammar, and with fixing the kinds of errors that non-native English speakers tend to make. I tend to catch errors of logic and continuity. I've also got, um, professional experience with writing mature scenes (hey, there are worse ways to pay the bills). |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm verbose! If you love commas and semicolons, I'm your girl, but some people get lost halfway through my long sentences. Also, I tend to add my own "voice" when I proofread, such as when I help my kid with homework. I try not to, but it's an issue I know I have. It seems to come with the territory, when I'm in "this would be stronger if it were worded like this..." mode. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I adore hurt/comfort, and I love a good character study, with balanced amounts of angst and love. I especially enjoy non-romantic love, mostly because it's not something I see often. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't do very well with heavy action/adventure. I can do it in small bursts, but if you're writing a story that's almost entirely chasing down the bad guy, with lots of explosions and plot twists, and without much character exploration, and interaction, I'm probably not going to do a good job. |
