Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I tend to be a bit slow but thorough when I beta-read, concentrating on grammar, plot, and characterization. I can accept documents in Microsoft Word, Pages (Macintosh), DocX, GoogleDocs, or in text, html or RTF format. I can either make corrections/comments in the document directly or in email, depending on the writer's preference. I expect that the writer would be willing to accept constructive criticism (I don't write "This is awful", but I might say "This needs work, here are some suggestions" or "There are some problems here with these points"). I would like to have at least 2-3 days to go through the document and will get back to the writer after that. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strongest area in beta-reading is in English grammar and spelling. I'm also reasonably good with characterization issues (I will only beta in categories where I know the source material) and finding plot-holes. I tend to be somewhat detail-oriented. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Dialogue correction (except for the grammar) is a definite weakness. Sometimes I get bogged down in the details - miss the forest for the trees, so to speak. Also (as mentioned in my general profile), I do sometimes tend to be a bit slow. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I enjoy friendship/bonding stories, stories with an intricate plot and/or mystery, stories that reveal information about the characters (to each other and the readers). I tend to prefer longer stories, but don't mind ones that are short as long as they're intense/hard-hitting. I tend not to mind slash, though I do have certain pairing preferences (check out my stories or my favorites). |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not a fan of romance stories. I don't mind slash in certain categories (I don't care for it in Labyrinth, Star Wars and Jedi Apprentice), but I'm not fond of explicit details, and it must *contribute* to the plot, not be the end all and be all of the story. I don't mind violence or a bit of gore, but it has to be in the story for a reason, contributing to the plot, not just gratuitous. I do not care for parodies or self-insertions. |
