Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a pro-active and involved beta-reader: if you're looking for for a dutiful typo-hunter i'm not it, but if you want someone who'll tell you when you lost your Voice and that that scene has to go and throw a victory dance at every milestone, that's me.
I'm not very gentle or easy, and i'm very opinionated. I do draw a very well-defined line between matters of technique and my own opinion, though, and i'm very enthusiastic with compliments when they're due.
In technical beta, i'll do what I can to make your universe work, but there are limits of scientific integrity that I won't compromise. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
(1) Characters - keeping characterization in-line and establishing sound 3D characters, (2) Continuity - plot-hole bloodhound, detailed worldbuilding and plotting, some tactical thinking, (3) Literary technique - story flow, musicality of language, (4) I'm a biology grad student and may provide technical beta in this field. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
(1) English grammar - I am not a native English speaker though i'm often mistaken for one. If you have more than the occasional conjugation error, i'm not the beta reader for you. I do perfectly fine on punctuation, though. (2) High-throughput stories - if you're a frequent updater or have very long story updates, i'm not the beta-reader for you. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
As mentioned above, i'm involved and rather opinionated. (1) For technical beta (biology), take into account that I *will* explain to you the science involved and that some things may not be feasible. (2) If you want to discuss planning/plotting techniques (not beta for a particular story), the only criteria is your understanding that plotting is a headache and willingness to tackle it anyway. (3) For editing (honest beta work) - it's more about personal chemistry than the style of the story. I tend to care about stories I beta as I do about my own, so. Quite picky. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
(1) I don't do will with the sillier stories, most comedic pieces and parodies. If it's intelligent or if I generally like your work, there will exceptions. (2) I may have issues with "darker" stories. My threshhold is pretty high, but if the severity of abuse or density of graphical descriptions of violence puts the story in the R/NC-17 area than I may refuse on this basis. (3) Some sexually explicit pieces, depending on style - though as ff.net only allows up to a rating of R, there shouldn't be a problem with stories to be published here. |
