Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Generally, when I beta, I go through once, for general/overarching problems (do I understand what's going on? Are there any glaring canon errors? Does the piece work as a whole?) before going through again for the little things: spelling, grammar, anything that sounds awkward or forced. I look for canon-consistency, continuity, and characters staying in-voice. Then I go through again and re-check everything.
If I beta for someone, I expect them to edit their own piece before I ever get it, and I expect them to tell me if there's anything in the chapter that needs special work. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best with clunky phrasing/dialogue or words that don't quite fit, for how the fic works as a whole, and for canon-consistency. With my own writing, my dialogue is probably my biggest strength. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Spelling is not my forte. I'll go through it with spellcheck, and anything I'm not sure of gets looked up, but there's always the possibility that something will look right to me when in fact it isn't. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
As long as I know the canon, I'm set. :D |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Nothing sexually explicit, please--I don't write porn/erotica and I don't read it either, so I'm afraid I would blatantly fail as a beta for any such scenes. |
