Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm aiming to be a professional editor, so I'm very open to any and all categories as I'm mostly interested in the author's POV and twist on characters. The fandoms I know I have down pact, and the ones I don't I would love for the authors to introduce me to them. My beta reading style is pretty intensive, it's the type I like to receive. I'm fairly annal over punctuation and grammar but can see the room for artistic leeway. I have the tendency to jot down changes and shift around paragraphs to help with flow, and can make fairly extensive BUT DOCUMENTED changes. I'm very back and forth, and love author input on any alterations I make to keep the stories true to their style while improving any weak spots. I feel that authors provide the inspiration, characters and plot outline while I'm the sounding board, plot hole catcher and spit polish. I love working with open minded authors who don't cry foul when I tear apart their 'baby.' I get that it's your story, but it has to be readable and if you don't want anything touched, you shouldn't be talking to a beta anyway. I have no particular issues with any pairing or story type as long as the story is good. I really want to volunteer as a beta because I'm tired of seeing amazing story lines and characterizations and little to no grammar, punctuation and structure. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Honesty is my main strength. I don't BS and just say 'OMG IT'S AMAZING!!' I am also very clear on what part of a story is bothering me as a reader. I can tell you exactly what doesn't fit where and why. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have the tendency to take a while, normally going over a project multiple times to ensure it's satisfactory and I have caught as much as I can. Given my hectic life this means sometimes it can take a while. I will also be very vocal if I believe that something is truly horrible. Directness isn't always a good thing. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I am very open, and have very few problems with any type of story if it has at the very least a decent plot. I am willing to read and work with pretty much anything so long as there's characterization. I don't even care if it's OOC, though I will insist on improving that as much as possible unless it's an AU. Heck, Mary-Sues are fine as long as there's more than goo-goo-gaa-gaa-me-like-you-stay-away-mine! |
