Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been reading and writing fan fiction for over 20 years, so I have a lot of experience. I also have a lot of breadth as both a writer and what I read - look over my regular fanfic net profile and you'll see a taste of the universes I've written in. As a beta - I would primarily focus on grammar, spelling, word choice (using the right words, especially for homonyms), sentence structure, and punctuation. I have one personal thing - I firmly believe that the fanfic for a show SHOULD reflect the spelling conventions and word choice for the country the show is set in. In other words, if the character's American - he should speak American English, and if the character is British he should be British English. Period, end of sentence. If that's "not your bag" to quote Austin Powers, I'm not your Beta. How characters speak is a big part of getting them to sound right - Captain Kirk does not "step out to the W.C." and The Doctor doesn't wear sneakers. Punctuation I'm a bit more flexible with - if no other reason than it's hard to convince your Word Processor to use punctuation from another country (but mine speaks British English just fine). And one form isn't better than another - it's just a matter of character.
OK - got that out of my system. I will beta slash, but prefer not to beta anything too hard core (at least ask me first before sending). I'm not a big fan of betaing het - most romance stories feel very Mary Sue-ish to me, and I don't like reading them, much less betaing them. Gen, of course is fine. I read hurt/comfort, angst, drama, tragedy, and where appropriate "family" stories ("Thunderbirds" for example). Ask before sending me "wee" anything (Winchesters from "Supernatural" or Tracys from "Thunderbirds"). I'm not a big fan of humor - and I'm a horrible beta for it (just ask Ravenmerc) - so just don't (just being honest here - I can't beta humor, I just can't).
OK - fandoms: Anything I've written, yeah. Star Trek: The Original Series (prefered pairing Spock/McCoy, but will beta others, including femslash), Stargate: Atlantis (PLEASE, please tell me who the pairing is if you want to beta slash, tho, I prefer McKay/Beckett or even McKay/Weir, but I'll consider other pairings depending on what you've got), Thunderbirds (TV-verse preferred, will consider movie if you're clear that's what you're writing), Psych (Shawn/Lassiter), The Real Ghostbusters, Poltergeist: The Legacy (NO Mary Sues, no romance, no slash, sorry), Wild, Wild West (Artie/Jim is fine), The Man from Uncle (Illya/Napoleon is fine), Randall and Hopkirk, Deceased (slash or straight/gen) - both 1969 and 2000 versions, there's probably more - if your fandom isn't listed - that doesn't mean I'm not interested - I might be but please ask before sending the fic. FILE FORMAT MUST BE Microsoft Word 2003 or EARLIER (No Office 2007 - I can't open the files). Word Perfect Version 11 or earlier, also acceptable. .rtf and .txt files are OK - but I'd really like to trade drafts through Word - because then I can use the Track Changes feature for editing.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
TECHNICAL beta - I can spot spelling mistakes, grammar problems, use of the wrong word (misuse of loose/lose is the one I currently find extremely irritating - or in a slash fic bear/bare). I find it easier to find technical faults in someone else's stuff than my own - which is why I also USE a beta for my stuff. ALSO -- and I'm really serious here, I excel at translating British English to American English and American English to British English - I'm fluent in both (been watching British TV since I was old enough TO watch TV). If I don't know the equivalent word - I can find out. If all you want is for someone to check the version of English your using vis-a-vis the actual show -- I can do that (and I can probably do it even for shows I don't watch like NCIS).
I also try to be enthusiastic and encouraging! Really. I'm just kinda' a serious person, naturally, anyway.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Punctuation -- I can do the basics, like punctuate dialog correctly, but it's one of my weaknesses. My spelling is awful, but I know how to make up for it by using a dictionary, word speller, and other reference books.
I'm not a big fan of humor - and I'm a horrible beta for it (just ask Ravenmerc) - so just don't send it to me (just being honest here - I can't beta humor, I just can't).
I've also improved a lot over 20 years - so I'd like to help others and pass down info and tricks of the trade to the next generation.
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
See Profile and Strengths -- I'm currently reading Star Trek (tos), Psych, and Thunderbirds -- so those, definitely, but - I think it would be neat to read some stories from some of the other fandoms I used to be in and I really haven't read in a while.
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I think I made this VERY clear in my profile. Um, I like "Stargate: Atlantis" a lot but not "Stargate: SG1" so - no SG1 stories or crossovers between the two.
