Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, I can be quite critical and picky, but if you're seeking to improve your writing ability... that is exactly what you will want. I'm not rude about my criticisms either, so you may feel relaxed and easy should you choose to submit something for me to proofread.
If your piece is only in need of minor titivating, I will most likely just make and/or suggest changes throughout the document. I will rework some sentences, correct grammar and spelling, replace a few basic words with a more sophisticated version. Wherever I make a change, I will make it immediately apparent so you will be able to see what I have done and whether you choose to retain or reject my suggestions. I will probably make no further comment unless I feel it is necessary.
If your story needs much more work, I may have to edit it far more heavily. As is the case with the prior, I will make any changes very obvious and leave them at your discretion. There is a good chance that I may write comments either before or after paragraphs, suggesting that you may add a paragraph here to better transition the scene or concept, or suggest you change a paragraph in its entirety. If your piece requires even more work than that, I will do all I can in the way of corrections and seriously write suggestions for you, and some key factors that may help you with reworking the story.
In the end, don't feel shy. I'm open for requests any time. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Look to me if you are wanting assistance with:
- Improvements and corrections with grammar, spelling and general syntax.
- Embellishments in regards to vocabulary, particularly flowery or 'beautiful' language.
- Criticism and suggestions on pace, movement and transition between ideas and/or concepts in the piece.
- General short story (one-shot) form, in both first-person and third-person perspective. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Most likely, I will not be able to help you with:
- Finding inconsistencies in your story, in regards to the fandom, i.e. a character from an anime mentions a person at a point in time before they have met this person. I am only familiar with the Zelda, Golden Sun and Baten Kaitos fandoms. Any others and I will not be able to pick up on plot holes or impossibilities.
- Action oriented or fast-paced stories, I have an inherent inability to write (or read) in the short sentences required to produce this effect.
- Humor or comedic pieces. I appreciate these immensely, laugh at them and admire them, but I will not be able to help you with them. I have a very biased view on what is funny and what isn't. Moreover, I find them very difficult to write.
- Long, chaptered stories. I have failed miserably at writing chaptered stories in the past -- I wrote a novel that turned out to read like one long, monolithic short story. Please turn to someone else for aid on this matter. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer to read:
- Short stories/one-shots. I will not be able to slug through 20 chapters of your fanfiction. I will accept a one-shot if its very long, assuming it still reads like a standalone one-shot. I may also make an exception and read stories with a few chapters... 3 is the absolute maximum.
- Stories within these fandoms: Baten Kaitos, Legend of Zelda, Golden Sun, One Piece, Harvest Moon or Fullmetal Alchemist. These are fandoms that I am familiar with. I will happily read outside of these, but I may be unable to make certain corrections. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I am perfectly comfortable with:
- Explicit gore or violence
- Explicit sexual themes (including those of a homosexual nature)
- Themes of drug taking or drug abuse
- Stories depicting transvestites or hermaphrodites
- Stories that are heavily religious, no matter the vein
- Stories that depict torture or any mutilation
Stay the hell away from me if your story contains:
- Necrophilia
- Bestiality |
