Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Usually, people send me their chapters and I will read them through a couple times (or more, if necessary) and make comments in the text about what I think. I check for spelling, grammar, and style. For style issues, I'll make some suggestions and leave it up to the author to decide what should be done. I also help spot out inconsistencies both within the story itself and within the context of the original work.
It helps if we can chat over some kind of IM program so that we can "discuss" the work. Sometimes it helps a lot just having to people brainstorm over an issue or if you're reading through my suggestions and have questions about the comments I make. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Tons of Middle-earth knowledge. I've read most of Tolkien's books, done some research, done the typical obsessed fan sort of thing. I'm really good with styling, that is, making the story more interesting to read. I'm very good with characterization as well.
I'm also a total Harry Potter junkie, so I feel very comfortable beta-ing that as well. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
While I'd like to think that I'm a good writer in a technical sense, my grammar isn't absolutely perfect. That said, betareading is a learning experience for me as well, and I don't mind going the extra mile to research and figure out the "proper" way of doing something. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
To be honest, I'm not all that picky about the type of story given to me so much as the quality of writing. I like all kinds genres of fan fiction. I do love a good humor or romance fic, but both seem to be few and far between.
As a betareader, I like to be able to turn around the more sketchy fics. Cliches? Mary-sues? Bring it on! I can help you fix it! |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't really like to generalize. If you want my help, and I feel like I can do a good job for you, the kind of story doesn't really matter much to me.
What does matter is your ability to not get bent out of shape at my suggestions. I call it like I see it. |
