Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I intend to edit the 'technical' side of fanfics more than the 'dramatic' side, to use vague theatre references. xD I love to work on the big picture- plot, characters, etc. - and make sure all the details fit into that scheme (details including, for example, that someone uses the right weapon, the right attack, stays IC, and that the author uses close-to-perfect grammar/spelling/punctuation).
As for the actual writing itself, I'm likely to simply point out passages that were confusing, uncomfortable, or unnecessary, and let you take care of those revisions as you choose.
In summary, I suppose I'm more of a fic counselor, guiding authors to strong ideas and accurate details, rather than telling them how to write. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
~Grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. - I won't say I love them, because that's just creepy, but I am very good at catching and correcting these errors.
~In-character - as long as I know the fandom well, I'll be keeping a sharp eye on characterization and questioning actions/words of characters.
~Details - I also find research fun and spend more time looking up backstory/past plots/certain quotes from manga or books than I do writing pieces.
~Plot - developing plots, including but not limited to original characters, is another pasttime of mine, though my plots are notorious for having the worst possible outcome for the characters within them. Hehe. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
~Description - although I may be able to point out places where prose doesn't flow correctly, I'm not very good at offering up alternatives. I'm particularly weak at describing nature and action scenes.
~Smut knowledge - not to my interest, therefore I don't know much about writing it well.
~Romance - I have a very low 'awwww!' tolerance, so if you plan on lots of cutesy courting scenes, I won't be able to help you there. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Pretty much anything, but dark stuff, character-driven stuff, or amazing fun plots are my favorites.
Angst is tasty but not necessary. Dark humour/irony is fantastic, as well as subtle symbolism, and pyschological mind games. Basically anything that makes me think twice or read the fic a few times to make sure I didn't miss anything.
On the other hand, I also adore dialogue and lots of revealing character interaction.
Yaoi, yuri, incest, rape, torture, whatever - all fine if tastefully accomodated. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Pure crack or straight comedy. Likewise, PWP and fluff without any sustenance, or smut. They're not bad to read every now and then, but I have little interest in betareading them.
Anything with the usual aggravating traits: self-inserts are a definite no, Mary-Sues only if you are willing to work extensively to fix that character and make it useable. |
