Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am an intense beta reader; I nitpick at not only grammar and spelling, but writing flow. I tend to correct first, and if necessary, add a comment as to the why I corrected it. I will bold or italicize my comments to be easily noted, but for those who are just going to accept the story back and post it, I am not one for you. For those who care about learning to be a better writer, I work pretty well.
Here are three questions I request you answer when you message me for a beta request.
1) Give me a good description of the plot, where you want to go, who's going to be included and how, what couplings, and how you're going to end it. This is NOT a summary you'd tack onto the story. This is revealing everything, as far as you know. A good writer normally has the story planned out before they start writing, so they don't get stuck on a scene, or end up lost in their own story.
2) What do you think you need help on? Grammar, spelling, word choice, plot thickening?
3) How long will this story be? How often are you able to spit out chapters? Do you post once a week, month, whenever?
Answer these, and we'll go from there. I will NOT, under ANY circumstance, look at a work that has already been posted, and you have made no formal request for a beta; "could u look at my naruto story 'super fabulous naruto kicks sasuke butt'? its on my page, thnx!" does not cut it. If my beta profile says Active, that means I'm bloody well active. You are coming to me for help, I am not going out of my way to help you. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I excel at characterizations. I have a strong understanding of characters and their behaviors, in all different situations. I also have a good understanding of writing structure, so I can easily tell if the paragraph makes sense. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am somewhat oblivious; sometimes I miss over a misspelled word, especially if the wrong letters are very similar, 'if' vs 'it' for example. I also work long hours, go on deployment for 6 months of the year, and my returns will become much slower. I have no true idea how to work a colon and semi colon, so there you go. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer action/romance stories. I like Naruto/Hinata, Shikamaru/Ino, Sakura/(Neji/Sai/Gaara/Itachi/Sasuke/Shino/basically anyone tall, dark, and broody). A longer list is on my profile. I am very unlikely to beta a work who's coupling I don't approve of; mostly because I think it's so out of character for, say, Iruka to like Kakashi, that I tend to try to 'fix' these 'errors.' |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Yaoi, yuri, horror stories. Couples I do not support (For example, Lina/Xellos or Naruto/Sakura) I will not beta, and if you're a brand new writer on their first story, I probably won't be a very good beta. I don't wear kid gloves, and if I can't get past the first paragraph without 500 mistakes, I just give up on a story completely. I don't beta stories in fandoms I don't follow. For instance, Death Note I have no idea about and therefore won't beta it. |
