Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I edit for grammar, characterization, believability, and style. I will give feedback about the last three, and I will not change anything plot-wise. If I think something's not believable, I'll say so, but I won't edit it out. Besides, things like the last three are chronic problems, and not things that may be fixed immediately or easily. Your style is your own, but sometimes you can improve parts of it. I won't mention stylistic issues frequently and repetitively if they are something I personally find unlikeable. After all, everyone has different tastes. Depending on my workload, I could get something back in three days to a week with edits and comments done in Microsoft Word with the changes tracker device showing what I edited and the comments at the end in a different color. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have good grammar. Generally. Spelling, well, I can tell when you're being inventive. I certainly am, sometimes. I'm also pretty good with what passes for believable characterization. I can also give advice for those who want feedback about plot and general believability. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can't suggest names for things, and I can be very harsh. I'll try to be as constructive as possible, but I'm pretty unforgiving. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I love reading drama/angst/tragedy and humor, and they need not be mutually exclusive. I like time-travel fics and alternate universes (the 'what if' kind, like where you go, what if Princess Leia was stuck on Tatooine instead of her brother). For Star Wars, I'm good with practically everything except for Exar Kun/Nomi Sunrider/Ulic Qel-Droma Sith Wars-era and the Clone Wars in general, unless it's Anakin or Obi-Wan-centric. For Harry Potter, I particularly enjoy reading about the Black Family (particularly Sirius and Regulus), the Marauder Era, AUs, and Post-DH. I also like Tonks or Hermione-centric fics, and, as hinted at, I will read anything and everything written about Regulus Black. For FFVII, I like Cloud/Aeris, Tifa/Rufus, Turks-centric fics, Vincent-centric fics, and fics where AC never existed. I enjoy one-shots, but I love well-written novel-length fics.
As to the categories I have not written for, I have varying degrees of competency in catching unintentional breaks with canon, which I will list nowish. I've played Final Fantasies 7 through 10-2 and 12, but I never got to the end of 8, even though I know what happens at the end of the third disc and throughout the fourth. As such, I'm good with Final Fantasy crossovers to that end, but I'm absolutely useless with anything before 7. I've played KH and half of KH2, so that's that. I've seen all of Buffy and Angel (with entire specific seasons seen a number of times), so I'm competent with those, fact-wise. With Howl's Moving Castle, I read and love the book, and I really liked the movie, so I'm good with that canon. With Naruto, however, I've picked up a certain amount of canon from fanfic that I haven't read about in the manga. Alas, I've only read what they've published in the American version of Shonen Jump. For crossovers in general, ask if I haven't listed the other crossover, because I may have no clue what you're talking about. Granted, if you just want a grammar nazi and don't care about canon, then I'll still read it, but if you want characterization and canon checked for all the crossovers, then I may not be your person. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Improbable slash. Explicit sex. Both. I am open to reading slash in general, but I'd prefer not to read it if you get too explicit. I have a thing against Snape/Hermione, generally, but I may make exceptions. Oh, and absolutely no M-preg. The logistics of it boggle my mind. |
