Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm an English major who frequently helps my friends streamline and tighten up their essays, so I'm familiar with all sorts of problems that can pop up in writing. I would expect you to have a basic handle of the English language and grammar structure, but I can help you clean up little nitpicky things and consolidate your piece into a finished, polished work. I can also help you pick out issues of character or plot and find a way to resolve them to strengthen the impact of your piece. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm great with picking up on incorrect homophones, things like "to, two and too" or "there, they're, and their." I'm good with selecting the right descriptive verbs for the action, as well as cleaning up clunky or awkward dialogue. I can also spot a Mary-Sue from a mile away! |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have sometimes been too caught up in the characterization to pay enough attention to loopholes in the plot, but this is more a problem in my own writing. With that said, sometimes if I get too "close" to the work, it's harder for me to see flaws in it. Also, I may seem harsher than I need to be in my criticisms, especially since I don't sugar coat my critiques. I will give you my honest opinion, which can be and has been regarded as a flaw. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would obviously prefer to read stories based in fandoms I like, but just because I haven't written about it doesn't mean I won't read it. I have no objections to fluff, PWP, or lemons, and while I'm not a huge fan, I'll read yaoi/yuri if it's well written. I would rather read one-shots: I'm in college and don't really have the time to read a new chapter for a scheduled updating of an uber-fic every week. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't like anime, please don't even ask me to read it. I can't stand Mary-Sues, "sugar induced" or "inside joke" fics, incest, or furries. There are certain fandoms that I don't particularly care for, and while I may read your story and check the grammar, don't expect much input on character development or plot. Don't expect me to be your word processor: if the spelling isn't even good enough to imply the English language, I won't bother reading it. |
