Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm new to being a beta, but I have better grammar skills than at least 90 percent of the people on this site. I'm also a recent college graduate (meaning that I'm probably older than 90 percent of the people on this site too), so take solace in the fact that I'm at least moderately well educated. I'm not hyper critical, but if your work is so bad that I can't correct the grammar mistakes without literally rewriting the entire story, please don't take offense if I refuse to beta for you. When it comes to plot flaws and stylistic inconsistencies, I don't critique people without at least balancing my criticism by noting some positive aspect of the story. Again, if I can't think of anything positive, I probably won't beta for you.
If you just want basic grammatical editing, I'm all for that. If you want someone to offer critique on the plot, characterization, stylistic components, etc. then I'm happy to do that too. However, please tell me what you want or I'll just edit for grammar/syntax errors.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a good grammar skills. My major pet peeves are writers that don't know the difference between "Eat Joe" and "Eat, Joe".
Also, I'm not a flake, so I won't leave you hanging once I've accepted to beta your work. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm crap at estimating how long it will take me to do something. I have quite a bit of free time at the moment, but I might think "Oh yes, I can edit this in one night" and it will take me 3. Sometimes, I think: "This will take me a week" and it will take me a night. There is no rhyme or reason to my working habits.
Also, I'm American so my spelling may be different than some authors. I use American spelling and terminology for everything, though I'm pretty up to date with British and Australian slang (the benefits of being an expat with a bunch of Brits and Aussies). |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer Naruto/Hikaru No Go/Harry Potter slash (shonen-ai/yaoi), but I'm willing to do anything not completely morbid in most fandoms (het, yuri, yaoi). Also, graphic M doesn't bother me. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I refuse to beta stories with predominant shota themes (flashbacks and prologues are tolerable, but I hate pedophilia with the passion of a thousand suns, and even two 10 year olds getting hot and heavy without an adult in sight unsettles me).
I refuse to beta stories (or at least scenes) featuring graphic rape. |
