Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My goal as a betareader is to improve the skills of the writers I read, while preserving the author's unique voice and writing style. I believe that anyone - ANYONE - who wants to write, and has the drive and passion for the art and craft, can (and will) improve if they are willing to accept constructive criticism, then follow through and stay focused. As a beta, I strive to keep my negative comments brief, and am effusive with praise. (And I am always looking for new voices!) But be forewarned, do not ask me to be your beta if you are sensitive to critical opinions, not serious about your efforts, or if you seek long ego massages - I treat this as seriously as I would if I were editing a potential bestseller, and that means I won't mince words when I must. But you will also have no bigger supporter or louder cheerleader. And trust me, you will know that I am on your side. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My own opinion, in descending order, of my best skills: dialogue (what I do best, by a mile), scene description, story development, characterization, pacing. And as a reader, I'm intrigued by fresh perspectives on the tried-and-true - they inspire me. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As I writer, I tend to "circle the runway" when I'm distracted or don't have a direction - so it stands to reason that I have that problem as a reader, too. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I am an unapologetic George/Izzie fan (the only ship I've ever sailed), therefore I am happy to read anything you might spin about them. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
No slashfics, please. |
