Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Who am I as a beta-reader? I'm a details guy who hates author's notes during a story (Before/after are ok; not during). I'm someone who hates plotholes and can't stand bad drama. And I'm someone who will torment you to get the story right.
I am also someone who WANTS to make your story better. I'm the type who will sit up on AIM or whatever to help; I love good stories and want to see more in the world. As long as you're not afraid of a little ego-pain, it'll be gravy. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My best strengths are plot structure, pacing of the story, and character development. I also work very well with the general theme of the story.
As far as plot structure, pacing, and character development, I'm a firm believer in the "Why" theory. If something is happening, I want to know why. I don't want asides or author's notes for anything; I should not be questioning the story-teller. I'm very good at getting a story from Point A to Point E while making sure we hit Point B, Point C, and Point D.
As far as the theme, I am very good at explaining how I feel reading it and why. This can help an author strengthen the story or go in a different direction. This connects to my points above; I believe that everything should make sense within the contents of the story.
Also; I'm not a fan of telling. I can help people SHOW their story, not tell it. Trust me; showing is better. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not the world's best grammar check. I'm not terrible, but I will not be helpful to you in that area. Spelling is not my strongest suit either; though I am good at pointing out overuse of words.
I'm also not a "fluff" reviewer. I can be hard on someone and make them really dislike me. If you want someone who wants to improve your story, not your ego, that's good. If not, I'm not the guy for you. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Any type of story as long as it has some length to it.
I'm pretty well versed in Final Fantasy VII, Mega Man lore, and Dragonball. Don't let that worry you; I'll read anything. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Nothing ultra-short. I prefer long stories with a great deal of details and plot.
By short I mean anything under 1,000 words. |
