Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am well-respected amongst those for whom I have beta-d in the past. I go through the story and clearly indicate the section with which there is a problem, and explain what the problem is and why it is a problem. I offer suggestions/tips on how the writing could be improved, and can offer constructive criticism. Anyone wanting me as a beta must be prepared for a lot of comments and highlighted areas. I do also comment on things I've really liked, so I point out really good parts as well. I do tend to have a somewhat schoolteacherish approach (both my parents were teachers). I am dyslexic, but that forces me to read slowly and so I am more likely to pick up on errors because I have to pay close attention to what I'm reading. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I can pick up on typos and accidentally-missed punctuation. I can explain why something is wrong and how to correct it. I can offer advice on how to improve the overall standard. The criticism I give is constructive. I'm thorough. I have a very good knowledge of grammar and spelling, and a large vocabulary. I can help you rephrase things that sound awkward. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My thoroughness can sometimes come across as being quite alarming because I pick out every little error - I'm something of a perfectionist. I can also be too blunt for my own good sometimes, and that can sometimes be hurtful. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Angsty fics, humour fics, stories with emotional depth to them. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Graphic sex scenes. I will beta if requested to, but I would prefer not to. I also don't do Mary-Sues or things that start with "My friends and I fell into Hogwarts/Middle-earth/etc." |
