Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My name is Meiko M. I'm a vet on fanfiction.net; I've been reading fictions on this website for 10 years and posting on it/been a part of it for about 5. I'm an English Major, working on a minor in the Classics, so I have a great love for literature and fiction in general. I can be more on the optimistic side, but if you want a truly constructive criticism and sincerely want to better your writing, tell me. I promise that I won't sugar-coat anything if you don't want me too. Generally I'm pretty equal on both sides of the spectrum; I'll give compliments as well as criticism, but I won't flame. It'll be constructive words that you'll be able to truly build your skill level off of.
If someone wishes for me to beta-read for them, the only expectations I have are these:
1) My advice/editing is actually going to be utilized, not ignored. I will take a lot of time to make sure I give good beta-reading, and I'd be irritated if all my help was for naught.
2) You're not just writing for reviews. Simple enough, yes? |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Eloquence, plot-line, characterization, theme development, and overall use of language. As an English major I can give good advice on the overall skill-level of a piece, how well it's been written (as far as diction and syntax go), and helpful tips on how to write flat or round characters. It helps if I've watched/read/seen/heard of the subject, but it's not a requirement.
I'm also particularly fond of fantasy oriented fictions, or romance genres. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not very good at different perspectives, but I can give them a try. As well as this I have a moderately busy lifestyle, so I won't ALWAYS be able to get the beta-reading done overnight; it may take me a few days. However it will never take more than a week.
As well as this, I am (as stated earlier) a bit of a kind person... I tend to be nice. If you don't for some reason like compliments mixed in here and there, I'm not the beta reader for you!!
I'm also not the best with horror or gore-centered fictions. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I tend to shy away from fictions written in present-tense. Essays are for present tense, stories are not. Use past tense people! But if you still insist on writing in present tense, I'd prefer it if you didn't come to me to beta read. I don't think I'd be able to give any comments other than "write in the past tense!!!!!"
I also can't stand fictions without any dialogue (not including poetry). Sorry! |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Anything yaoi/yuri (homosexual) and anything bashing a cannon. It's fine if you don't prefer cannons, but I can't beta read brutality.
I dislike angsty and drawn-out plots as well... it's good to have suspense and to have good plot development,
but if you have for example 5 chapters focused on one fight, it's a bit to drawn-out for me. |
