Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I usually work as an overall beta. I mainly check spelling, grammar and phrasing, but I will also point out if something about a plot or character doesn't work for me. I try to explain why I suggest most changes, but I will not, unless explicitly requested, provide detailed explanations for every technical correction. I work with the writer to perfect the story, preferring to look at multiple iterations of it rather than just checking the final version for spelling and grammar. Though if the fic is short, a single checkthrough may suffice.
If you want me to beta, I'd like to know who your story is about, and your basic plot idea(s). I don't need the entire plot in advance, but I do need to have a sense you think you know where you're going with this. Contact me by email, please, not via the PM system. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at characterisation through dialogue, and the flow of sentences and paragraphs. Spelling and grammar are very important to me, and I will be thorough in checking them. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not so very good at plotting. I may miss a gaping plot hole because I read over it in the flow of an otherwise well constructed story. I will also not shower you with compliments. I may occasionally point out something I like, but mainly I will be talking about the things that are *wrong* with a story, not with what is right. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Although plot is not my own strength, I do like plotty, gen stories, character introspection and most of all, inventive crossovers with a little bit of humour. I also prefer completed stories (or at least ones that exist entirely in outline) to loose chapters. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do *not* want to beta anything that couldn't be posted here. And I have no great liking for romances in general, either. If you want someone to beta fic that purely centers around a relationship, without a plot to back it up, please ask someone else. |
