Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I beta for Lord of the Rings -- bookverse AND movieverse, though I am a lot more familiar with the books. I'm most comfortable writing about Faramir and Eowyn, at least on a personal level, but have beta read action fics, Mary Sues, and short romances.

If you send me a chapter one at a time, I will go through it with MS Word. Grammatical corrections are included, so don't worry about being perfect (though I do prefer if you run spellcheck and do a preliminary reading before sending anything to me; it saves time). I include bolded commentary on the content itself (canon issues, suggestions on rephrasing, stylistic issues, etc) and will highlight and correct grammatical issues in another colour. I am not a Nazi; I don't require that you use all my suggestions, but to at least think about the corrections and make changes as you will. I want you to keep your own style. If you want me to have another look at the chapter after you've made initial corrections, I'd love to read what you have. :D

If you're easily offended by criticism, I am NOT the beta reader for you; I do point out what I like in the fic, as well as your general strengths, but I do not exist to stroke your ego.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I study writing at university (and Tolkien in my free time), though I'm also a huge fan of English Renaissance texts. If you need help with archaisms, appropriate dialogue, and narration issues, I can help you. I correct my classmates' papers for money and fun, so I have experience; I'm the resident go-to person for grammatical nitpicking. :P

I've read not only LotR, but the Silmarillion & Hobbit, and also many of Tolkien's other works. If I've forgotten a bit of canon, I do research; there's no excuse for ignorance in fanfic.

If your fic includes poetry, I can comment on that, too, but I'm much more brutal with critiquing poetry. I have little to no tolerance for bad poems.

I'm very good with sorting out grey areas of plots, as well as canon characterisation. I do this all the time for my friends. If you know what happens at the beginning and end of your fic, but have little idea about the middle, I'm more than willing to talk it through with you over MSN, given that we respect time differences.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm an honours student at uni. I write a lot of papers and have to keep my marks up; my schoolwork comes before fanfiction, and since I take six advanced modules at a time, it's often loads of work. It may take some time to get a chapter to you, especially during exam time, when I can have anywhere from 3-7 papers due. I am often slow to return chapters because of this. Just nudge me by email or private message if I've disappeared.

I speak British English. However, if you are American and would prefer American spellings and Americanisation in general, I can adapt, but Britishisms will likely slip in. My apologies. English is not my only language, so I sometimes struggle with vocabulary and general communication (but that's mainly in everyday speech; I'm quite proficient when I can SEE the words).
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Shorter fics (drabbles, poetry, vignettes, fics with 20 or fewer chapters), crackfic, Faramir/Eowyn, angst, parody/humour. Mary Sues will be considered.
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Horror/torture, mpreg, long fics that are based solely on sappy romance, Aragorn/Arwen, and very explicit smut (sensual is fine, by the way). I will not beta "humour" fics that are essentially ten-page inside jokes and/or characters screaming words like "cheese" and "niblet" in a lame attempt to be funny.
