Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I would like to help with characterization and plot elements, if I'm familiar with the fandom, although to make canons as in character as possible. Thus I'm always willing to give feedback not only on the parts that are already written, but also on how you would like to procede. That way I give you my thoughts as to how well I think your plot works or if there is something that might needs addressing. Nonetheless, it is of course your story and if you want procede in a direction I don't like I will still try and help improve everything else.
When it comes to grammar and spelling, I'm certain I can point out a few things, but I am not a native speaker and thus I won't be able to catch everything. But in the future my goal is to become an English teacher (English as a foreign language) so why not get some exercise. I do catch more mistakes in other works than in minde (unless I haven't read what I have written in a long time), I suppose because shortly after I have written what I wanted to say is so fresh in my head that I'm blind to parts were I forgot words or typed something different.
My biggest problem is I guess the part that I'm often perceived as rude or agressive. I try to sugar coat everything I say a bit, but I'm usually quite direct and brutally honest about my opinion. So if you are easily offended, I am probably not the best choice.
It's not that I try to be mean or anything, it's just the way I like to receive criticism and so I dish it out that way. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I guess what I could help you with, is motivating you, by giving feedback and help when you are unsure about a scene or have writer's block. Depending on the fandom I'm usually good with helping to keep the character IC and still get him in the right direction for the story.
Plus I think I am a lot nicer and open for people who write OCs, than most writers / readers. Still, I won't let a blatant Sue slip by, but I won't go as far as calling any OFC a Mary Sue just because she gets to be romantically or sexually involved with a canon. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As I already said above I'm not a native speaker, I tend to make my sentences too long and have other similiar german interference problems. This way I'm also inclined to use expressions that sound unnatural. So maybe at the end, get someone else to check for all the mistakes I have overlooked.
Of course I also willing to beta for people who write in German. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
As I am to lazy to select all my fandoms in the tv, book and movie categories, I rather you take a look at my joined fanlisting (link is in my profile) and see which fandoms I prefer. It's not a complete list, but don't hesitate to ask if your story fits some other criteria I mentioned.
My big love in fanfiction are twisted or dark romances, vampires and original female characters, so if you one of the following is in your story I'd love to help you out. Now you probably wonder what is a twisted or dark romance? Usually a romance would be two characters in love, who prove throughout the stories and all perils that they are meant to be together. Dark romance is somewhat similiar just that the problems have some really dark or disturbing elements. For example, one of the characters is kidnapped or somewhat overpowered by the other characters and although she does feel a certain attraction to him, the way he behaves and talks about her seem to make such a relationship impossible. Think about Dracula playing mind-games with a member of a hunting party and so on. It does never really end with the fairy tale happy happy version, for example, although the character might become a bride, it would mean that she had give up certain things about herself, like friends and family. Or her colleagues kill her or Dracula has enough of the game and kills her himself.
I guess Vampires speak for themselves, although I must say, I do not like all vampire fandoms, but more on that below.
Original female characters I mean well developed original characters, that are not your typical all mighty sue. I don't care if the character is powerful or not, but she should fit the fandom and the situation. Even if her whole point of existing is to have a romance plot, that does not bother more, more of the opposite. I rather have a character that fits a canon than reading some canon/canon romance where the only connection is that both characters are hot and favoured by a lot of fans. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Although I do watch some animes and have read a few mangas, I don't feel at home with anime fanfiction and thus I won't beta-read anime fandoms. The same goes out to slash only fanfictions. I don't mind slash, even written some myself, but all in all I'm more of a het girl and if there is sex, I'd prefer it to be het or threesomes. However if you story has slash and het, that's a different matter.
What I really do not like are stories, where the character is raped and then lives happily ever after with her rapist. As I wrote above, I don't mind intense stories that deal with rape games or rape itself, provided it is written as either one. |
