Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
What I like dealing with the most when writing are plot, themes, consistency, and general analysis. I enjoy breaking down things to their components to try and create the tightest story in terms of plot development. As such, I would be more useful in terms of analyzing plot!fic of various sorts, though breaking down themes can also be useful for a romance fic (in terms of ongoing conflicts and such). I work best through a combination of emailing and occasional chat sessions, to help clarify points.
My grammar and technical abilities are fair, though I'm not the person to turn to for sentence structure and such. English is my second language, though I speak it fluently, and I don't live in an English-speaking country, so I will not be up-to-date on the latest slang.
I'm fairly detail-oriented, and both encourage and enjoy trying to have a story be as accurate as possible (within reason, of course).
I would expect someone I beta-read for to be friendly, honestly interested in improving, though with the obvious knowledge that none of my comments are more than suggestions based on how I see things, and the final call is up to the author. That said, I give honest commentary, though not unnecessarily harsh (I beta out of an honest desire to encounter more good fanfiction. It's for fun)
When accepting a story, I will try to get it back to you as fast as possible, or at least give you an approximate ETA. I'm willing to work on both WIPs and oneshots. |

in-depth grammar, structure, metaphor-and-simile-laden prose. I'm willing to work with a story that has pr0n, though I'd be pretty useless in critiquing it. It would be difficult for me to beta a story that I can't really get into, just because then the analytical part of my brain would simply shut down. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
In FMA, my preferred characters are the main good guys, mostly (at least, they're the ones I'm most used to writing). I also like movie!fic, and am quite partial to Hei/Ed (convincing me to beta anything about them wouldn't take too much effort).
In general, I like hurt/comfort and angst, but I'm not particularly picky in terms of the genre. If the story catches me, I'll be happy to beta it. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I dislike senseless angst, gore, and death. Angst and death are fine, if there is a point to be made beyond extracting emotion from readers (I've written my share of angst), but I'm not especially into heavy gore unless the plot REALLY calls for it. Shota and incest are out. I don't especially relate to yuri. Rape (non-con) and dub-con squick me. No PWPs, please.
There are some characters and pairings I rather dislike, but that can already be discussed in terms of the fic in question. |
