Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm more of an editor than a beta reader - mostly I catch typos, misused words, and stuff. I can usually tell when something doesn't work, but I don't always have ideas on how to fix it. I'm mostly into sci-fi/fantasy, but I'll beta anything I'm given if it doesn't have too many grammar/spelling problems. I can work with stuff where English isn't the writer's first language, but I have a personal bias toward pieces which show a certain amount of familiarity with basic English grammar. I am willing to work with writers to improve their English, though. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best at catching small things, like typos and misused words. I also tend to find minor inconsistencies in the details - offhand remarks or statements that are later contradicted. I'm mostly a details person. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
While I can tell when something just doesn't work on a large scale, I have a hard time knowing how to fix it so it does work. I suppose that's better than nothing - if you don't know that it doesn't work, there's absolutely no way you can fix it, right? |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'm a fan of sci-fi/fantasy, with a strong preference for action-adventure. For some reason, though, most of what I write ends up as angst/hurt-comfort with a good-sized dose of romance. So I really don't mind those, either.
My favorite pairings are always good to work with, though I'm perfectly happy to work with other pairings - they're just as valid, in my opinion, as my favorites. If you don't understand the character codes, you're probably not a fan of that universe so don't worry about it. SG-1: S/J; ST:TOS: S/Saa; ST:Voy: J/C, but not as much; B5: J/D, D/L, and a couple others not actually on the show (although I'm working on a couple fics involving the extra pairings). |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not interested in gushy love stories and other types of pure romance. I don't mind having it as a side story, but I don't like the Romance genre. Adult themes, at least all the ones I've encountered (most of which can't be posted here) don't bother me at all, though I've never tried to beta one before. Oh, and most parodies just don't work for me. They don't offend me or anything, they're just way too cheesy for my taste. Other than those, I can't think of anything I really _won't_ beta. |
