Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Who am I as a beta-reader? Hmm, tough question... well, I suppose I'm the sort who does his best to find what areas of the chapter or story are weakest and point them out. I seem to be terrible at finding grammar and spelling errors in my own work, but I find them a lot easier to spot in other's. All I really expect out of the author I'm betaing for is understanding that me pointing out problems and weaknesses is not the same as me pissing on their story and telling them it's crap. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm pretty good at fight scenes and at seeing areas where more detail could be added. Sentences that are awkward or just wrong and most spelling or grammar errors are pretty easy for me to spot. I have a good memory when it comes to canon in the genres I beta for and will notice discrepancies in the stories that are shooting for canon-compliance. While I'm probably pretty terrible at writing romance, I have managed to find a woman who was willing to marry me, so I think I know a little about it. I'm also pretty good at spotting characterization issues. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to be blunt. If something is wrong, I call it wrong. I suspect that when these sorts of comments appear over the internet they seem far more harsh that I intended - especially if one is expecting to hear that their story is already perfect. Basic punctuation is no problem, but I've always had trouble with run on sentences in my stories and might not be as good about noticing them as I should be (unless they happen to be pretty obvious). |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'll take just about anything that doesn't involve excessive amounts of angst, or non-het couplings. I like stories that try to work within established canon, but that isn't a real big deal. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Excessive angst (everyone gets a little down, but some stories have it way over the top). Yaoi, Yuri, some combination there of. Unless the character's sexual preference is at least hinted at being nonhet (such as Haku in Naruto), then it's definitely not my cup of tea. I'm not a big fan of lemons unless it actually seems to work within the story. I'd rather not have them at all, but I won't say no just because it's there. |
