Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a writer, most of my experience has been in the Halo and Megaman universes, with a foray into Metroid (didn't work out so well). Over time, by writing fanfiction, my talent for writing has been fostered, practiced, and honed against the stone and fire of live reviewing, and as a result my writing has gotten much stronger. I plan to pursue a career as a writer, but one important skill is being able to help others with their writing; it is a core skill, as helping others also helps yourself.
Science fiction is my prime area of expertise.
Please be mindful: I have a pretty busy schedule, so if I can't get to your thing right away, I apologize. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
For writing, my strength usually lies in character development and the portrayal of characters as reasonable and realistic beings, including a certain moral ambiguity. I also enjoy filling in holes in canon where I can, though sometimes the holes are left there on purpose by the creators (I'm looking at YOU, Bungie). Besides that I've also been known for my grammar and vocabulary, and I've extensively studied Latin. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Plot is one area where I fall head-first down an elevator shaft. My stories tend to have simple plots, devoid of those wonderful little twists commonly found in sci-fi novels. When I do manage to put in such a twist, it's either already anticipated or comes out of nowhere without any sort of base. Romance is also a difficult area for me. In addition, constant previous revision is a problem, as things occur to me as I write or something canonical is revealed that I must ret-con into my stories. I like to bend over backwards to accomodate official canon, but sometimes it's just hard. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
As I said, science fiction is my raison d'etre. However, I am open to other genres of writing, whether of this flavor or not. Basic grasp of the English language, including proper capitalization and use of commas, is necessary. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
While I have nothing against dark and broody settings, stories that are written just for the sake of being "emo" are out of my interest range. Whether you're trying to get a message across or just telling a story, I don't mind. I won't betaread anything written to deliberately insult other groups of people, and if you send me a story focused on a Mary Sue or Gary Stu, my first (and mandatory for continued betareading) recommendation will be to fix that. I'm not a fan of plot-protected characters, either, but I can stomach it to a certain degree. Other than those, however, send me whatever. |
