Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, my main focus is grammar and spelling, but if a fic seems illogical or out of character for the fandom, I'll point it out and try to offer suggestions. I may be somewhat scatterbrained and tend to have an erratic schedule, so if I don't return a chapter within two weeks, don't feel shy about poking me via email! |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
With the exception of the Fullmetal Alchemist anime, I am up to date on all the canon for the fandoms I beta-read for. I can help you with character motivation, attention to details, some background of the fandom's world(s), and internal logic as well as spelling and grammar.
I can also make a few suggestions for style development: have trouble with how to add in description, new characters, and/or plot developments so that they actually make an impact on the readers? I can get picky with that sort of thing, but yeah, I can do that. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As much as I love reading a good mystery or action/adventure, I'm not good at writing them, so I may not have a lot of suggestions for improvement where the overarching plot is concerned, although I will ask you questions if something seems strange.
I have an absolute tin ear for poetry; it almost all looks the same to me, good or bad.
Yeah... porn? Warg is not allowed to write porn, current poll status aside. I don't mind reading it, but I can't offer a ton of suggestions for toning down the purple prose, there. I read a lot of Gaiman and MacGuire and hold a degree in animal medicine, so I'm not too easily squicked, but I openly acknowledge that one person's kink might easily be somebody else's nightmare fuel, so I tend to leave the lemon/lime scenes to authorial discretion.
While I would offer my services in the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom, I've only read the manga, so I'm afraid I won't be of very much help for (first) animeverse stories. I have been keeping up with the 'Hood subs, though. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Canon-friendly pairings and genfic are love. I'll take non-canon pairings too, as long as they make sense, but I expect more in-fic explanation and setup for something like Snape/Molly, Book/Jayne, Eowyn/Ioreth, Breda/Pinako, or Zali/Tsume than I would for something that the author has already given us some reason for shipping. (Though no matter what the pairing, I never discourage setup! I may live in that Wolfstar Almei Rayne submarine, too, and I even tried Zali/Tsume just for the writing challenge, but that doesn't mean that I don't occasionally read a fic with that sort of not-quite-canon pairing and wonder if the author was reading the same subtext that I was.)
I also like Alternate Universe fics, crossovers, and OCs when they make sense. If you need help making it fit together, I'm your Warg, but if you want to, say for instance, introduce a new character who carries a lightsaber into Lord of the Rings so that she can upstage the canons, we might not get on the same wavelength quite so fast. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't do mpregs. I'm sorry, but Warg is a bio science geek. Changing the basic laws of anatomy for cheap drama makes baby Wargie's head hurt. If you can explain it... well, it's still not exactly my cuppa for beta work, unless we're talking parody. I might read it then, if it's a good one.
I'll do my best to help with Suefics, but I can't promise I'll be completely gentle. So if you have a "borderline" case where you feel it isn't a Sue, but want a third party to confirm that your Vetinari/Jayne/Snape/Legolas/Tsume/insert-love-interest-of-choice romancing-OFC is completely free of Sue traits, well... I'm not saying it can't be done well. I'm just saying that if you want me to look for changes to make something less Sueish, they can be found, 99% of the time. Whether or not you want to hear those suggested changes is up to you. (Hint: if you're really confident that it's not a Sue and you don't want to change it, don't contact me abut it. I'm sure it'll be fine, if you've really tried to put some effort into the writing. At least it'll be worth seeing once.)
