Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been reading and writing for years. I love helping people deepen their knowledge and strengthen their writing. I've had exposure to a wide array of films, books, mythologies, histories, games and others, so if you don't see your specific fandom under the categories I have listed please send me an email, especially games - after I started reviewing and selling, I haven't kept a strict list on those I've played. Even if it's new I love trying out new things and will be glad to help you in whatever way I can. Remember that everything I send back is a suggestion - your story is yours to write, I make recommendations instead of demands. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at finding mechanics errors like spelling, punctuation, grammar. I'll also help with flow, description and narrative voice. I'm pretty thorough and a stickler for proper language. I also research - if there's something I don't know, I'll scour the internet and libraries, and I will encourage you to research as well. I'm a bit of a teacher, if I spot weaknesses I'll try to help teach you to avoid them in the future instead of only patching them now. I also try to keep a strict schedule and will reply promptly, if your story isn't back within 5-7 days then email me and I'll probably have it ready for you. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Although I like reading and writing action and mystery, I'll try to improve your scenes but I won't write them for you. I'm also a stickler for proper punctuation. I make suggestions, but they may come across as "do this" sometimes. I enjoy humor, but I'm not especially gifted at writing comedy myself. I have also been told I can sound too serious, it's not an insult, I use sarcasm as a reminder both for myself and others not to take me too seriously. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'll read almost anything, I particularly enjoy humor, drama, introspection, and often write action. Most of what I read fits into 'canon', and if I'm not already "fluent" in the fandom you're writing in I'll do research on it to be sure I recommend the best tweaks to your story as possible. Unless doing so requires reading manga - I rarely have access to that. I also prefer to work via email, docX is not as reliable or convenient as a free Yahoo account. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not an extremely rigid canon purist, but I won't read "slash" pairings because they almost universally violate canon. I don't mind twisting an idea into a new setting, but if there isn't at least some basis for it in canon (or work to evolve it from canon) I'm going to let you know; I prefer stories that are true to the original. Not to say that I don't enjoy a divergence, and if I feel an AU has promise I may still try it. |
