Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I edit for characterization, grammar, spelling, tone, and use of vocabulary, and more or less if the author asks me to and I agree to it. My style entails reading the work as a whole entity first, and then going back and reading it again, this time applying my critique. After editing for grammar and such I include a collection of general thoughts, and questions, and suggestions. I expect that anyone who wants my opinion is prepared to hear it honestly and in full. I'm an undergraduate student, so I'm very busy. I do this for fun. Anyone who asks for my help will have to understand that. I will not have it back to you in the space of one day, maybe not even one week; two is more reasonable. I need that time both to get my work done and also to be able to spend some time on it to do a proper job of it. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I like to think I'm good at logistics. I will get really nitpicky about practicality and likelihood, and I like to look for plotholes. I suppose I could also say I've been around the fandom block. There isn't much you can show me that's going to offend or surprise me. I'm good at writing fluidly, and I'm good at editing for writing style. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
You won't get much correspondence before a lump critique; I'm not chatty. I learned grammar not from a book, but reading old novels and Nabokov, and let me tell you: your modern grammar will suffer a bit if you try that. That isn't to say my grammar is actually wrong, just that I've been told it sounds a bit archaic at times. This isn't natural for most people, so it shouldn't be that much of an issue. But you should be aware of it if it comes up. Be aware I like semicolons. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer stories in a fandom I know, but since I haven't got those listed, one could always email me and ask if I'd be willing. I haven't got much by way of preferences so much as things I'm not averse to editing. I don't mind OCs, for one thing. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
There isn't much I wouldn't betaread, but I'm sorely tempted to draw the line at explicit sex. This isn't a moral or "icky" consideration on my part, but the fact I've never had it means I've not got experience with it. Beyond that, I just can't take vore seriously. Also, I will not beta poetry. That is my one unyielding Will Not; I'm not fond of poetry. |
