Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm very detail-oriented. A spelling mistake, or a comma out of place? I tend to notice it almost immediately. If I beta your work, the first thing I'll look at is spelling and grammar. If you are the type to bring foreign words into your story, know that you aren't the only one (just look at all the Spanish in Bleach, or the many languages in One Piece)...and that I can help with that as well. I've taken a few courses in Spanish and Japanese, so if you use terminology or words from either language, I can help you out!br /

Secondary to that is the story in itself-does it make sense? Are the characters in character? Since it's not an absolute science, I can't promise my accuracy here. Instead of just going through your story and correcting what looks wrong, I'll add some suggestions or questions at the end to make you think a bit more about the direction your story is going, and how your characters are behaving.br /

Finally, I may try to push for you to balance the story more. If you've got a lot of action in one chapter, maybe the next scene should be a bit calmer, maybe a conversation between characters, or narrator/protagonist introspection. If a scene has a lot of dialogue, let's see if we can add in some details of the location, what the characters are doing as they speak, and so on. This is completely my own opinion, and isn't something you need to follow to the letter if you don't want to.br /

If you come to me for a betaread, you should expect it to take some time, but you should also expect it to be completely looked over when I get it back to you. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Small details; grammar and spelling, or canon-compliant facts. If it's something that has only one right answer, like a character's age, their hair color, how their primary attack is spelled in the English alphabet, I can find the right answer for you. Once I'm through with your story, the word-to-word accuracy of the story should be sound. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can't always claim an accurate grasp of characters myself, so my view of "realistic" actions by characters in your story may be a bit off. If you think your main character is capable of some unspeakable act, and I don't think he could, I may be totally off. And that's something you may not want me to look into. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Shorter would definitely be better, if only for the sake of how quickly I can get the story/chapter back to you. I'm more comfortable with major characters, but that wouldn't stop me from looking at a story you wrote for a minor character. Romance, humor...generally speaking, the category of a story doesn't bother me...with some exceptions. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I won't beta a story in which you describe with great detail sex, graphic violence, or rape. I can barely handle reading a story like that, let alone try to edit it. Though vague references to, or implications of the first two are alright, I can't stand rape stories.br /

If you give me a cliché story to read over, I might highly suggest that you move away from the cliché it's based on, but I won't turn it away. |
