Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Okay, so I've been writing fanfiction since I was twelve, I've got a fair idea of what I'm doing. I'm very strict on grammar and style-I've copy edited professionally. I point out plot-holes or strengths when I can and get into your story, meaning that it'll be a passionate critique. Also I have a God Card - er, I'll quote random things in the middle of your story, and at funny parts go "AHAHAHAHAHAHA" for like five lines, so you might get annoyed. If you want a sample beta - aka, send me something short and I'll look at it as a test - go for it.
Just as a note, the newer you are to fanfiction, the more stuff I'll probably have to say. It took years for me to hone in my style and produce fics that people are willing to read, and I never had a beta. I want to help as many authors as I can reach that same level of comfort with their own writing. If you've been on for a while, you've probably got it down, and I won't have a lot to say other than some minor things. And no, I'm not just talking out of nowhere, I've learned this from experience.
If I say something to offend you, I apologize. I don't flame, I critique, and I try to avoid generalities like "This was a weak story" unless it REALLY wasn't good - and trust me, everyone has those fics. And I'm not saying I'm perfect at this stuff, either - I'm not. So, if I say something you don't like, don't retaliate and start flaming me. I'm only trying to help. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar, style, that stuff. If it's a good story I really get into it and fairly review it as I'm going along, making comments on certain lines and whatnot - so passion?
I'm usually good on time. I usually sit down and beta something right away. |

Um, a lot of times I don't have much to say for a good writer. Just a couple of marks here and there and usually mindless comments. So, sometimes I have no idea what to write.
You know what I said about timing? I usually get it done, but don't email it right away. So, you might need to bug me about it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I really like stories that are written in the style that I've stuck too-which is a bit more serious, a bit more analytical. However, I love pretty much all genres, so send 'em over!
Also, crack fics are accepted, though there probably won't be more than "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"'s typed everywhere. xDD
Oh-I'm fine with betaing yaoi/yuri, I am an avid yaoi fangirl. I also don't mind seriously mature fics (graphic scenes of any sort), some of my favorites are. xD A lot of authors won't beta lemons and blatant sex scenes, but I do. I might not have much to say ABOUT said scenes (if it's written well), but I'll look at it nonetheless.
I usually don't mind if you use dub, though I prefer sub. For the fandoms I've marked, I've read all or most of the manga, so if you're basing it more on that, it should be fine. If you're combining the two, I'll try to help you make it as artistically awesome as possible. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Don't send me something of a fandom I have no idea about, because then I'll just be confused.
Also, don't go overboard on angst. There's only so much I can take. Had it been four years ago, I would have been all for it, but not anymore.
Also, if it's a blatant friendship/"Go Team!" story, or an overused plot... Don't, please. Spare me.
ANDOHMYGOD, if you send me something with a Mary Sue/Gary Stu in it, I WILL KILL YOU. I said I'll accept "blooming" authors and all that, BUT DON'T BE A TOTAL NOOB ABOUT IT. OCs... well, it depends on how integral the OC is to the plot. I hardly ever use OCs myself, and the only one I currently use, I don't want to - and thus, she is just used as a plot-mover, when necessary. So, if it's something like that... let me look at it, and I'll let you know.
Unless it's a crackfic or an AU, I don't like to read things that are blatantly not cannon and the characters not mostly IC - i.e., if you're all up on the DN fandom, I don't really want to read that Mello and Near had hot sex at Wammy's which is why Mello hates Near's guts. If, however, you say that Mello had a bit of a crush on Near when they were younger and when Near rejected him he learned to hate him/be obsessed with him-that I can do. If it somehow works into their characters, or somehow ties into the plot of the actual fandom-cool. Otherwise, blatant "Jounouchi was raped by his dad so he went to Kaiba for help!"-I will kill you.
Okay, in conclusion, send it over and I'll tell you if I'm willing to beta it. |
