Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hey, I'm delighted you're considering me as your beta. :) Here are a few things about me as a writer that you might be interested in that may help your decision. Although I've consumed fiction on a regular basis since I was very young, I didn't start writing until I was around twelve. I was quite awful at first, but I've been working to hone my skills since and now I consider myself good enough to be a formidable beta. I write much, much more than I publish, so a lot of my work will never make it to this site. All writing can be submitted to me via e-mail. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a good eye for spelling and grammar, so I'm good if you need a fresh pair of eyes to look at your work and catch things that a spellchecker can't. One-shots, drabbles and vignettes are the type of fanfiction I enjoy the most, so I'm probably strongest when it comes to beta-ing those types of works. Same goes with series of drabbles/vignettes/one-shots. I try my hardest to give constructive criticism and am quite good at identifying a work's strengths and weak points. Finally, I believe that characterization is the most important aspect of fanfiction and I personally put a lot of effort into understanding characters' values and motivations, so if characterization isn't your strong point, I'm the one to go to. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Please note that I am not an experienced beta; I'm just trying this for the first time because I want to help out some less experienced writers. I do have some grammar weaknesses, as I don't study grammar religiously like some people do. I also have a bit of a short attention span, so while I'm open to reading multi-chaptered works, if the chapters are long you might experience some lag in my responses. That's all my weaknesses that I know of, really; if you're concerned (or just picky :P) you can read some of my more recent published fanfiction and pinpoint them for yourself. (By the way, I do hope you'll point them out for me if you do!) |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Short works from around 700-5,000 works are preferred, though I'm open to beta-ing works of almost any length. Obviously, I'll be of much more use when beta-ing fanfiction for fandoms I'm familiar with, but if you still just want someone to help with spelling/grammar I'm open to fics for any fandom. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm open to pretty much anything; the only types of fics I can see myself absolutely refusing to beta are multi-chapter alternate universe fics (AUs that are created to explore alternate possibilities within the canon universe are fine, but no Highschool AUs, etc.) and fics with graphic sex scenes, AKA, lemons. And please, no fics revolving around slash/yaoi/shounen ai/anything in that vein - I've just never been comfortable with it. |
