Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I look for characterization, spelling, grammar, and continuity. I generally run through a piece of writing in word and make littles changes in the writing by myself; though in the past I have not sufficiently noted these changes, I aim to amend this by highlighting all changes I have made.
I have been a beta reader for two or three helpless Suethors, but I can only take so much of Mary Sues. I will not accept fics with a focus on OC's. That's out of my league.
I am not a super-experienced beta-reader but I have done my fair share of editing for others. I was a beta-reader for Arekisu when she was rewriting her old famous story Detours of the Avatar Fandom. Arekisu has since left (I was unfortunately unable to keep her faith in the site), but I have edited one-shots for other people here and there.
I will not edit anything with sexual content. Swearing and moderate violence are okay with me, but lemons, yaoi, yuri, incest, pedophilia, etc, are not.
I am not as active on the site as I used to be because I don't have a lot of time to write, but beta-reading is the perfect way to stay involved in fandom without having to write all the time. Send a request whenever and I'll happily help you out. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling: I have pretty good spelling.
Grammar: One of my strongest points. SAT review and AP English does that for you.
Characterization: Canon characters I'm pretty good with. I have some problems with Katara and Suki, but others are easier for me to judge.
Continuity: I have a really good memory; I tend to remember little things. Memory is always important when dealing with continuity.
Objectivity: I consider objectivity of utmost importance. I will not flame you, I will guide you. I will instruct you. I will give you small positives for every negative. I will try to be fair and patient. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Detailed Feedback: Despite being a writer, I have trouble phrasing exactly what I say. Because our communication is through text and not words, I might seem to convey an emotion that I am not trying to. I sometimes can be sarcastic or have a dry sense of humor that is hard to grasp through written text alone. Do not be offended by what I say; I am not here to offend.
Theme: I am not a person to ask for a theme of a piece. I believe that the writer himself must determine and know his own theme. I will comment on the development of the theme, but not the actual theme itself. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Avatar is my forte, but I am familiar with Jak and Daxter, Naruto, Ranma 1/2, the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Kingdom Hearts(II), and Death Note. I have dabbled in Full Metal Alchemist and Pokemon.
I like Drama, Action/Adventure with a side dash of Romance, Hurt/Comfort, One-shots, drabbles.
Having a continuing story to beta would be great too. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
No NC-17. No lemons. No yaoi/yuri unless it is extremely mild. No other uncomfortable subjects (i.e. bestiality, rape).
I am not big on Kataang and Maiko. I do not like excessively fast-paced romantic stories. Horror stories are not my forte either. |
