Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I like my English, and I'm a stickler for spelling and grammar. Bad spelling gets on my nerves, and I hate reading stories that switches between tenes, even if they're really good. I like to read good stories, and I'm sure everyone else does, so I want to do my best to help proof-read others' stories to make sure everything is professional material.
Have you read stories that make you tear up and cry? I consider stories that can touch the reader like that really good stories. I'd like to read stories like that. It's basically those kind of stories that everyone can comprehend with that I consider to really, actually be five-stars stories. I'd like to read stories like that and be proud to say that I've had help in making sure those stories touch readers everywhere. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling, tenses, who-whom type things that gets on about everyone's nerves, proper punctuation, etc.
Got problems with misused words? Can't tell the difference between 'it's' and 'its', 'then' and 'than', 'sight' and 'site', and of course, everyone's favorite, 'their', 'there', and 'they're'? Well, you've come to the right person! I might yell at you a bit for mixing them up, because honestly, I learned all of this stuff in primary school, but I do realize that:
A) some people never learned
B) mistakes from typing really quickly
Thus, I am here to fix that!
Parallel structures get on my nerves as well. For example, a sentence with proper parallel structure goes like this: "I like to bike, swim, and hike.", NOT "I like to go biking, swim, and hiking." (that was a bit overexaggerated, though).
And TENSES, people, TENSES! They make reading OH SO MUCH EASIER TO READ! You hate switching between tenses, I hate switching between tenses, and I can fix that! |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Wording isn't exactly my strong suit. I'm good at it, but when it comes to choosing the best ones, most of the time I pick the best or moderate sentences. Also...it's not my strong point to fix a passive voice sentence. No idea what that means? Grab a Writer's INC book, or go to one of those college sites. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like a good action/adventure/mystery/drama type story. Romance is good too, especially WAFF and FLUFF. I also go for angst sometimes, when it's really well written ones, and on occasions I read horror type stories. Of course....we can't forget about the wonderful genre called humor, now, can we? Humor is good. I like humor as much as the next person. As for pairings, if we're getting into the nitty-gritty of romance, I have specific pairings I like, pairings I don't, and pairings I don't really care about, which translates to: Hey, I'm pretty open minded about it. Sure, I'm up for it. I'd prefer to work on stories with pairings I like, but in the end I don't have that much preferences. I just request that you e-mail me/pm me a brief summary and tell me what the pairings, if any, are.

Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not a big fan of yuri and I definitely do not like mary-sue/gary-stu type fics, unless we're going to do some bashing. I also don't prefer stories where a canon character gets into a relationship with an OC, unless it's interesting, creative, and usually a side-pairing. Other than that...if it's for Harry Potter, I'm afraid I just can't do anything with Harry/Draco and Albus/Scorpius. For some weird reason, I tried to get over that dislike, but it's never worked. It's horrible, DM/HP and SM/ASP fans, I know, but I just can't! I might get over it one day. Maybe. |
