Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been a writer for 11 years now. Some experience in beta-reading, but given I pretty much edit my own fics after completion and double-check facts, spelling, and grammar, I'm pretty sure I have a good idea on what it takes to make a story presentable and compelling to a reader.
In beta-reading, my intention is to offer suggestions as to how events and/or scenes may go over better or could be written better, as to provide a second eye to search for a spelling or grammar mistake that may have been missed. If applicable, will also thoroughly check to make sure the characters stay-in-character, and follow the conventions of the source material.
My beta-reading standards are as follows. If either of the following conditions applies, don't request for me to beta, because I won't do it.
1) Your story is a clump of words. Simply put, if I get to your fic and I don't see complete sentences, don't see line breaks, or don't see paragraph breaks, I'm gonna reject it. If you can't take the time to format your story, then don't bother asking me to beta it.
2) Oodles and oodles of misspelled words/names/places. For the love of my sanity, run your story through a spell checker before requesting me to read it! And if you're an anime writer, please go through it yourself as well because you know those things will tell you Pikachu and Naruto are spelled wrong even if you did spell them correctly. I'm willing to point certain things out for correction (like it should be "there" instead of "their" or "they're") and probably difficult-to-spell words here. The spell-checker is my standard... if I go to your fic and see dozens of misspellings before I even move the scroller - then I know you didn't use a spell-checker, and I'm gonna refuse to read it until it becomes obvious to me that you did. |

Excels at fact-checking, keeping names straight, keeping character personalities straight (where applicable), will definitely give feedback and constructive criticism no matter what. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Only decent-to-good at grammar, not good in character/location descriptions. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Will pretty much read anything in the Anime/Manga or Cartoons categories. The thing is that I have to know a lot about the series in question to be an effective beta. Some series I may flat out reject because I know nothing about them (or next to nothing). Those will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Please don't be afraid to shoot me a Private Message if you're not sure about a series. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
If you're a writer submitting a request for a show like "Naruto" or "One Piece," for example, (in other words, shows in which the English dub is many, many episodes/seasons behind the original Japanese), please note that I'll only beta stories that include up to the events covered in the dubs as of the date I receive the request. If I notice I'm beta-ing a story that does spoil a future event, I'm going to stop reading and politely decline doing a review for it. |
