Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a "Perfect Imagination" accredited beta-reader. My PI is #5604525727.
Currently I accept only beta-requests for short pieces in English or German due to constraints of my job and my offline life in general.
As a beta-reader I endeavour to provide constructive criticism in an honest, friendly and flexible manner. I will always give my honest opinion, based on the best of my ability and experience. You won't like everything I have to say, but I can promise that what I have to say will always be constructive and never cruel.
If you want my help, you need to know what kind of help you need. You have to be able to tell me what you want from me: concrit regarding plot and characterisation or nitpicking style; just a few general hints or thorough editing?
Technically, I expect authors to send me only spell-checked MS Word files that they have proofread (at least) THREE times for typos on their own. I offer beta-reading, not spell-checking or typo-searching. Authors working with me have to be comfortable using the tracking, comments/reviewing features of MS Word. I expect a follow-up mail after I've sent your piece back to you and I am willing to look at a piece a second time, provided you have really worked on it in the meantime. I will not look at a piece more than twice.
Even though my emphasis in writing fanfic is based on "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter", I'm familiar with a number of other fandoms and willing to beta-read even o-fic.

- the fandom and the rating of your story
- the summary of your story
- the wordcount of your story
- an explanation of what kind of help you need

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I can be very exacting if that's what you're looking for. I pay a lot attention to detail and I -will- catch it if you didn't do your "homework" aka research, and something simply doesn't add up in your story. I have a good eye for description and setting: I will scour away meaningless purple prose with a pumice stone.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I take writing seriously. If you don't, I think I can guarantee that you won't be happy with my help.
Though I do not write poetry myself, I am an avid reader of German and English poetry. I do critique poetry, but I warn you: I am virtually certain that you won't like what I am going to say about your poem.
I don't like reading parodies and satires. Therefore, if your piece is a straightforward parody or satire, I'm not the beta-reader you need.
I have no experience with betaing dramas or comic scripts. For help with that, you need to approach someone else. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
At the moment I prefer working with writers who have already some experience. If you struggle with the basics of writing, I'm not the right kind of beta-reader for you, because I don't have enough time to "tutor" beginning writers the way they deserve. Due to constraints of my offline life, I am also unable to offer help with big projects. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
As I said above, I'm not a spell-checker and typo-searcher, and you won't like what I have to say about 99% of all fanfic poems. Apart from that, simply send me the summary of your story/the length of your story and explain to me what kind of help you need, and I'll let you know if I'm up to the job. |
