Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am available to make your story much more readable. I happen to be quite the stickler for grammar and spelling, as well as in proper dialogue quotation. I also pay keen attention to choppy short sentences that can be combined to make the phrasing smoother. In senior English class I'd be given 6 or 7 papers to revise and beta-read before they'd be handed in. People called on me for what I could do for their papers - and grades.
As you probably realize, I've written a good deal of fanfiction, and I love to write. Before I went to college I considered being an English teacher, because I'm very particular about how one presents himself/herself to others in writing. I would be honored to be chosen as your beta reader. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
grammar such as contractions, punctuation, proper phrase structure, the use of colons and semicolons, fixing run-on sentences, the use of their/there and it's/its, plural/singular confusion; spelling mistakes; misplaced modifiers (for example: She snapped a picture of the deer holding her camera steady, as opposed to the correct form, Holding her camera steady, she snapped a picture of the deer.) I am quite nitpicky when it comes to sentences making sense.
I'm also good at helping someone reorganize the flow of the story so descriptions/character meetings/dialogue doesn't seem to come out of nowhere. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As for my weaknesses, it may be in getting lost enough that I can't figure out what to do first in a story. Sometimes in understanding the characterization of unfamiliar characters, but that can be resolved by being explained the basic premise of the storyline by the author. Because I focus a lot on details, sometimes I get lost in them and will sit there not knowing what to fix first. Communication with the author is good in figuring out what point is supposed to be made in these sorts of sections. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'd prefer to beta stories in the categories where I've written (Pokemon, Monk, Pirates of the Caribbean, Green Mile) and in Harry Potter, which is a huge section with certainly plenty of authors that may need a beta. I also don't mind beta-ing stories in the movies category, because many of those movies I have seen before. Other categories are fine as well. However, if it's anime/manga, I may not be able to follow as closely or understand any of the backstory behind the fanfic, which I'd hope to know something about before being a beta reader for it. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Anime and Manga stuff, other than Pokemon. |
