Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Personally, I believe that betas are among the best things in the entire history of the universe.
That said, I also believe that its a job that can be one of most rewarding or the most painful. I will beta read romance, tragedy, comedy, drama, horror, you name it. What I will not beta is a story I don't think you've spent time and effort on - and by time and effort, I mean building up your writing skills. I can check for grammar and spelling errors, but I'm good at pounding out plots and I don't want to spend time teaching someone the rules of the English language or how to properly punctuate dialogue.
To be blunt, unless you can write the equivalent of someone with a few years of experience under their belt, I probably won't want to beta your story. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I go very in-depth with my critiques, and I think I have a good handle on hammering out characterization and plot in particular. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am very nit-picky. I'm also nice, but I don't sugar-coat things - I call them how I see them. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
It goes without saying, but something I know the source material for. Besides that, I'm fairly open to just about anything in the genre or pairing area. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Erotica isn't my cup of tea. Not in saying I won't necessarily read it, but I don't write it and I can't offer pointers in that respect.
Otherwise, I won't attempt to beta badly-written stories that I would have to navigate through with a map and machete, for obvious reasons. I don't have the time right now to really jump-start a beginning writer, as much as I would love to. |
