Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been writing in one form or another for around twenty years now, mostly just for fun. I don't have any college degrees to my name or what not but I'm fairly knowledgable about the English language and writing in general so I should be able to help you out. I like to be encouraging, but I won't hesitate to let you know if something just isn't right; normally I'll give suggestions for anything I critique but the final product is up to you. The only real expectation I have is USE PROPER ENGLISH! This isn't a chat room and I don't care for baby talk. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I've written a number of decent pieces of my own in the past and am used to coaching and mentoring others in a variety of subjects. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I've been out of school for A WHILE now (1989?) so some things are a little foggy to say the least. Also, I'm a little hidebound in my thinking at times (18 years in the military will do that to you...) though I do tend to adapt eventually to almost anything. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
At heart I've always been a science fiction and comics fan. Horror is okay and I like good drama, not to mention the 'X-filesy' stuff. Anything with an element of the odd or surreal is fun as well as stories incorporating genuine emotion. Well designed characters are always welcome. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not a homophobe, but just about anything with 'slash' in it turns me off immediately. Also, I'm a big fan of writing pre-existing characters in character, so unless there's a very good rationale for having them out of character or a 'growth' process that shows their change from the original character to whatever the author wants to portrey, again I'm pretty turned off. If your stories fit into these catagories, I'm probably not your beta. |
