Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a Beta Reader, at which I have had three years experience, I prefer to make changes on my own and bold what I have modified for the author's reference. If the author then has any questions about what I have changed, it is easy to go back and find, and I will do my best to explain why I changed what I did. Personally, I think this method works best. I firmly believe that the author is boss, and my changes are only suggestions. If an author does not like what I change, my style of Beta-ing makes it easy of the author to return to the original writing. If you would prefer I edit your work differently, just ask. I've done that myself when getting a Beta of my own.
About Me: I am about to turn 19, and am a Freshman in college taking Honors Composition. This combined with my lengthy experience means I'm not stupid, and I will be able to help you with whatever you require. I spend most of my time reading, writing, drawing, and swimming, when I'm not in class or studying. I recently adopted a schedule, which has at least half an hour of writing time daily, so I will be able to return a chapter to you in a few days, depending on schedule fluctuations.
On the author's end, I expect to be notified if my services are no longer needed, or if the author has decided to quit writing. Take as long as you like to update (it's been a year since I updated myself, so time is no problem), just let me know if I should not expect you back. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My greatest strength is my terrific sense of grammar correctness. I'm very good at picking out what is wrong with a sentance and fixing it, no matter how complex. On most days, I'm very good at spelling. In writng, I'm rather good at characterization, so if you need help with characters or descriptions, I'm your girl.
I'm also very good at picking out when a sentence is getting too wordy and needs to either be split into two sentences or just trimmed down.
I'm a very creative person, and I'd be excellent at offering you plot suggestions if you need them. If you just need an idea-bouncer, that's me. I am very familiar with all of the series I am willing to Beta for, and I own every (or close to every) manga book published for each one. I'm not above researching something if I need to to help you. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My biggest weakness is explaining what I've found wrong. I have a slight amount of trouble telling someone, "this is why your wording is wrong." However, I am getting better. I also have my days, like everyone else, when I just can't spell. My spelling, however, is not much of an issue if I'm editing. I can almost always pick out a word that is spelled wrong.
I am a procrastinator by nature, which might get in the way of my work. This is why I do not update my own stories often. However, reading/editing something new is easy and a terrific distraction, so anything you send me would be very near priority 1. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'm a very traditional sort of person, so I very much prefer to read/write/edit canon pairings. The romantic in me wins here too, I would love to edit and read a good romance story for you.
As a Beta, would also prefer that you have a decent grasp of grammar and spelling. While I will help those who really need it, someone who is beyond aid (no practical knowledge of spelling or grammar) might be beyond my patience. However, if I give you up as a lost cause, I will still let you know and give you pointers on how to improve. And I will always be open to helping you once you've improved a bit. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I refuse very little, and will help with almost anything that is not beyond aid. However, I would prefer to not read or edit yayoi or yuri, or very explicit sex scenes. I will edit non-canon pairings, within reason (such as, I despise KagomexNaraku and InuYasha/Kikyo, and would prefer to not read those either). |
