Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love editing, and - as such, I suppose - also love betareading. My style is mostly suggestion-based. I go in, fix the grammar mistakes, fix any major structure problems, then leave lots of comments and suggestions so the writing isn't taken over by any of my personal style quirks (and I have a lot of those). My favorite part of writing is the characters, so as far as that goes I consider myself to be fairly well-versed in staying in-character.
I try to be prompt, but if I'm unable to get the document in question back by the specified date I'll let you know in advance. I try to be as polite as I can, so I suppose I expect a similar courtesy. I never criticize as a personal attack, so I hope no one takes it as such. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a grammar bat and I know how to use it. I'm also very good with flow - I can write smoothly and I can spot ways to fix unwanted choppiness. I also LOVE writing dialogue, and I feel very confident in my ability to emulate regular speech, as well as to have sort of "witty" conversations. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I sometimes have trouble keeping plots straight, so for major, major betareading for multiple, connected stories, I wouldn't be the best choice. Also, I don't like to be mean, and I have a hard time telling the difference between constructively critical and too harsh. If you want someone to be brutal, then I really don't think I'm the right candidate. Other weaknesses... Well, my spelling is quite bad, but spell-check almost renders that irrelevant. A great deal of my writing is character-based, so stories with a lot of action and fighting aren't my strongest suits, either. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer stories in fandoms that I write in or that are on my favorites list - obviously, this is just for familiarity. (Although it never hurts to ask, because I'm sure I'm familiar with things I've never really explored on this site.) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I wouldn't like to beta-read pure, raunchy smut, but due to the site rules I don't think that's too much of a concern. Also, I'm female - so while I consider myself a good judge and observer of human nature, I wouldn't like to betaread a story where knowing lots of intimate manly details is vital. |
