Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Believe it or not, I am probably just your average beta-reader. I will beta stories that to me seem unique, interesting, and well written. I will not beta stories that are downright terrible or mediocre.br
Things that will disqualify your story for my services automatically:
1. Being a crossover, no matter how feasible.
2. An moderate to high error density.
3. Excessive out-of-characterness.
4. Unbelievable Alternate Universe.
5. Pairings. Male homosexual relationships, including Albus and Gellert, or any relationship, including canon relationships, that is not established in a believable manner. Femmeslash is accepted case-by-case in the Harry Potter universe and other universes where canon (whether requited or otherwise) ONLY. (This means, for example, that a Chuck/Olive pairing in the Pushing Daisies universe would NOT be acceptable, but a Sharon/Beth in Wonderfalls or Susan/Talia in Babylon 5 WOULD be acceptable.) This applies especially to main pairings and secondary pairings. Tertiary or "mentioned only" pairings are on a case-by-case basis.
6. Sequels. If you are attempting to purport a sequel for beta, prequels must meet my post-beta standard for plot, dialogue, and narration.
Things that will help you or your story:
1. Access to Skype. If I am able to do a read-by-read with you while I'm betaing, feedback is generally much better for you.
2. Low error density.
3. Plot. A decent plot is key. A decent plot will raise the minimum expectations for error density and make your story more favourable as a prospective acceptee for my beta services.
As for my style, I tend to fix most glaring errors automatically. Suggestions for larger changes, like character name changes, etc, are listed in a separate report noting my automatic changes.
A sample report of my betaing can be found below.
Betaing Report: {Story Name Blanked}, Chapter 22
Beta Reader: ToManyLetters
Capitalization: 1
Spelling: 2
*Wrong Word: 6
Punctuation: 79
Rewording: 10
Italicization: 0
Note: With how angry Ron is at Hermione, I don't think he'd feel very inclined to use her nickname; he'd very likely use her full name. I didn't go through and change them as I've left that decision up to you, but, still.
Note: You use the phrase 'pulls at [one's] lips' a lot, you may want to try dodging that phrase and find other ways to express a characters facial expressions.
Note: “but his gaze was once again shuttered.” This phrase seems rather clumsy.
Opinion: I don't think you should do an epilogue, really. As long as you end the final chapter on an upbeat, heart-warming tone, one last chapter should be sufficient, and, if done properly, better than an epilogue.
* Like chucked instead of chuckled, barley instead of barely, etc.
Review: All in all, a good chapter, even if it was rather short. I think it's definitely good enough to make up for the enormous gap in updates, and a short break between the postings of chapters twenty-two and twenty-three would make them even more ecstatic. I'm glad to see you're back and writing and now am also anxiously awaiting the next chapter for {Story Named Blanked}. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Things I can catch easily:
-Most typos
-Most spelling errors
-Most homophone errors
-Most punctuation errors
-Most syntax errors
-Most Out-of-Character-ness
-Most plot holes / plot contradictions
-Most Non-Canon compliance (If that is an aspect of your story) |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't catch everything, unfortunately, but I catch what I can. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I will accept the following pairings for the Harry Potter series:
Ron: Lavender, Hermione, Ginny, OC
Neville: Luna, Hannah, Hermione, Ginny, OC
Luna: Harry, Neville, OC
Harry: Gabrielle, Ginny, Hermione, Hannah, Pansy, Lavender, Luna, OC
Hermione: Ron, Neville, Harry, OC
Draco: Astoria, Daphe, Pansy, OC
Pansy: Draco, Blaise, Harry, OC
Ginny: Harry, Ron, Neville, OC
Lavender: Harry, Ron, OC
Astoria: Draco, OC
Gabrielle: Harry, OC
For accepted pairings of other fandoms, check my profile or PM me directly.
I accept femmeslash and next-gen pairings on a case-by-case basis. I have no problem with betaing well-written incestuous stories as long as the pairing is het or femme. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not beta male/male slash, teacher/student (generation gap) pairings, or Marauder-era stories. I will also not beta stories involving Cho as a central character. I reserve the right to reject any story for any reason without the need to tell you why. |
