Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a technical writer by day, and a beta reader by night. I love all things English and I love being thorough. As a writer, expect me to break out the red pen and ask a LOT of questions. If you're scared off by lots of edits, you should probably look elsewhere. I do try to be pleasant in my editing approach, though, and give praise where praise is due. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm really good at asking questions, especially thought-provoking ones. Why is your character doing that? Would they do that? Would they say that? does the next pat make sense? I'm also very good at English mechanics: grammar, punctuation, etc. I'm also good at finding "awkward phrases". These are phrases in the story that I feel take away from the overall mood. I'm good at finding this out and suggesting revisions. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not so good at keeping tenses straight. Past and present tenses are hard enough, but when you break into the past perfect, it's a whole 'nother ball game. I'll promise to do my best :)
Also, like I said, I make a lot of comments, which make be off-putting to some people. Even if I like your story, I will make a lot of comments. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
My preference is for stories that have a solid grasp on minute things like punctuation. That way, I can focus more on the actual story and worry less about "comma here", etc. But I understand that it doesn't come easy to everyone, so I'm willing to help.
As for the type of stories, I'm game for anything, but I do have a soft spot for story ideas where the author is "thinking outside of the box". It's not easy going against the grain. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Nothing that strikes out at me. I've beta'd stories of all different genres, so I'm really open to anything from all sorts of different ratings. |
